Seasons In The Sun
( Terry Jacks )

Goodbye to you my trusted friend
We've known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and A B C's
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.

Goodbye my friend it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I'll be there

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed were just seasons
Out of time......

Goodbye Papa please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to teach me right from wrong
Too much wine and too much song
Wonder how I got along.

Goodbye Papa its hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Little children everywhere
When you see them I'll be there.

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the seasons
Have all gone.

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the seasons
Have all gone.

Goodbye Michelle my little one
You gave me love and helped me find the sun
And every time that I was down
You would always come around
And get my feet back on the ground.

Goodbye Michelle it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
With the flowers everywhere
I wish that we could both be there

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach
Were just starfish on the beach

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach
Were just starfish on the beach

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the seasons
Have all gone

All our lives we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed were just seasons
Out of time......

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun

I think it was a french song first so maybe the person who wrote it first had some problems? I don't really know but it makes me cry every time I hear it!

Here's the story of Terry Jacks and "Seasons in the Sun," direct from an unimpeachable source: Uncle John's Fourth Bathroom Reader.
SEASONS IN THE SUN - TERRY JACKS
Background: The song was originally written as "Le Moribund" (literal translation: "the dying man") by Jacques Brel in 1961. The English Version: Rod McKuen adapted the song to English . . . Terry Jacks heard it on a Kingston Trio record. In 1972 he took it to a Beach Boys' session he was producing, and the Beach Boys recorded it.. but didn't release it. So Jacks, who was distraught over a friend's death, did his own version.

Jacks was playing his year-old recording of it one day at his house when the boy who delivered his newspapers overheard it; the boy liked it so much that he brought some friends over to Jacks' house to listen to it, and their enthusiastic response inspired him to release it on his own Goldfish record label. The result: It skyrocketed to #1 all over the world and sold 11.5 million copies.

Thats one memory I'll never forget.

After it came out my friend and I just bought the 45. We played it over and over like 5-6 times on the phonograph at his house on the dinner table. His father was watching a football game or something on TV at the time and getting increasingly aggitated. Then he screamed! "Damn it shut that crap off!" as he barged into the kitchen. Being the strict disciplinarian he was I got scared and ran out opf the house down the street leaving my phonograph and 45 that we split the cost on behind. Never seen them things again. Never asked. Never mentioned that song again in front of his dad. I think it was smashed on the kitchen floor! :(

I remember when this song came out - I have the 45 tucked away in a box in my attic somewhere and there were so many theories as to what this song was about.

The one that was circulating the most at the time was that Terry Jacks was dying of cancer and he wrote this song as his last farewell. Rumors are a funny thing!

How about the flip side. 'Throw a bone in I asked him once more, Cause my doggies been hit by a car'

This guy sings about some real depressing stuff!
