Fan gets Bonds' 713th ball, photo -- but no autograph
Posted: Monday May 8, 2006 12:55AM; Updated: Monday May 8, 2006 1:28AM
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Carlos Oliveras has a home run ball specially marked to assure authenticity.
It just doesn't have Barry Bonds' autograph as the slugger refused to sign the ball.
The 25-year-old Air Force serviceman bought his lucky ticket because he wanted to see Bonds chase Babe Ruth on the career home run list. Oliveras had little idea he'd be the one being chased -- by fans, by media -- after snagging career home run No. 713.
When the San Francisco Giants' slugger hit a mammoth shot in the sixth inning off Philadelphia right-hander Jon Lieber to put him one behind the Babe on Sunday night, the ball bounced around Section 202 and into Oliveras' hands. "I never thought I was going to be lucky like that," Oliveras said.
This was the first game of the three-game series Oliveras and a friend attended. He bought the ticket two days ago because he's a Bonds fans and wanted to see a slice of history. Then he was part of it.
"Everybody was looking on the floor," Oliveras said. "The ball bounced to me. I grabbed the ball and I stuck it between my legs. Everyone was still looking around."
Oliveras, a native of Puerto Rico, said no one immediately tried to snag the ball because he had it hidden. When the media and Phillies security discovered he caught the ball, other Phillies fans -- many who spent the series jeering the sullen slugger -- started yelling for him to throw the ball back. "It made me nervous," he said.
Oliveras, an Airman 1st Class who lives on McGuire Air Force Base in Fort Dix, N.J., paid $20 for his seat in Section 202, Row 7, Seat 24. He said he is a Bonds fan and would probably keep the ball. He hoped it would have Bonds' signature.
Bonds said no when he was asked at his news conference if he would sign the ball if a fan wanted an autograph. Moments later, when an official asked if there were any more questions, Oliveras piped up:
"Will you sign my ball?"
Bonds smirked and said nothing.
After his news conference, Bonds shook Oliveras' hand and took a picture with him. "I'm happy because I got a picture and he shook my hand," he said.
There was one signature needed though. Oliveras had to sign a waiver for Bonds' reality show.
Barry. The DUDE with da TUDE!
Here's what I would of done. After Barry said no to signing. I would of pulled out a pen and defaced it like below then tossed it back to him and said here, keep it!
Barrys 713th! Keep it Chump!
Then sign the sweet spot 'Roid Boy'
Your wither gonna piss him off or he won't care. Either way, who does?

Sometimes, I wish he was playing around the time his dad played. Pitchers like Drysdale and Gibson wouldn't have tolerated his crap. He would been digging dirt out of his teeth or needing a big q-tip to dig the ball out of his ear. The solution to this chump is simple: Give him NOTHING TO HIT. Can't put the ball in the seats if he can't get a good pitch to drive. At least the league won't have any "pomp and circumstance" if(or when) he passes the Babe. Thankfully.....they don't give parties for 2nd place.

Of course. The sis lacks the baseball knowledge so let me enlighten ya a little. Barry Bonds is a black afro american, the son of Bobby Bonds who played baseball back in the seventies, part of his career for the Yankees. He is the god son of Willie Mays as his father and Willie Mays are good friends. He played his entire career with the Pittsburgh Pirates and then the San Francisco Giants. In 2001 he broke Mark McGwire's single season home run record with 73 dingers. However due to steroid, theres been a surge of power and batting average in the latter of his career (2000's). He is one home run behind the Babe's 714 and closing in on Henry Aaron.
But with all the steroid controversy and what the general public percieves as his lack of admitting to usage. The fact that he perjured himself rather then the stating the obvious and ****ing up blame like Jason Giambi did then moving on, he denies it. Others like Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa bailed out of baseball to avoid the controversy. Rafael Palmeiro, the dumb ass he is, tested positive after the whole steroid scandal was exposed and forced to retirement. It was Jose Canseco that started this whole thing and he finked in his book. Its the whole thing with breaking the long standing home run records that irks fans. Place a big ASTERISK next to Barry Bonds name when and if he sets the record.
does he at least speak English?
Parody for Greg to sing to Barry. Sang to Orleans song.
You're still the one
I want to talk to in bed
Still the one
That turns my head
We're still having fun
and you're still the one
You're still a ****
Yes thats what I said
Tracks from *****s
Thats why your muscles are big
Is that how you get your kicks

OK OK Bust on our team. Where 2-5 so far this year. We don't make millions. We pay $70 a season to play! Its for uniforms and umpires.
But were staying in games. Last night we lost 9-7. Monday night we were down 13-0 going into the bottom of the sixth. Think we would just throw in the towel???? We scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth. Then one-two-three the other team in the top of the seventh, scored four more runs in the bottom of the seventh and made the final out with runners on 2nd and 3rd. Against the first place undefeated team I might add. We had them guys shittin in their pants them last couple innings. From almost getting called on the 15 run rule being shutout to almost beating them
Were not the best in the league but we can beat any team in the league at anytime.
Also in our defense.
Most teams we play have a bunch of hulky young studs in their teens and twenties. Some of these guys are clearing 300+ foot fences with moon shots. We have 6 starters on our team in their mid forties with only a few teens and twenty somethings. Others in mid thirties.
Playing third base when a hulkster rips one done the line can be downright dangerous! I caught a line drive hit at my head yesterday I thought was gonna rip the web out of my mitt. Their like missles!!!!
Even with knees that can't hold up like they used too because of several injuries in the past, I still slide into bases like a Ricky Henderson of young. Dive for infield balls hit in the holes if it presents a possible chance to make a play or keep the ball in the infield. Its all part of the game! Competitive but we have fun too.
I couldnt agree more! I'm a fan of "the game". Doesnt have to be major leagues. I could watch a good softball team (not MARK's! LOL) (I used to play softball till my divorce...)

I am seeing the steroid freak p*ssy on 6/3 at Shea and I am hoping he hits HR #715 at my game...I know I am asking alot since the Giants get Colorado at home this weekend and Florida on the road next week, but who knows, maybe I will get lucky.....I am not a Bonds fan, but I would like to see him become the #2 all time leading home run hitter* (haha) at my game....
Knowing my luck though, Felipe Alou will sit him and he will break the record on Sun 6/4....Bonds should be a lock to play the Fri 6/2 game for sure....
He's still a legitimate power threat. When he started steroids he was already well over 500 home runs. Question is whether records would of been broken had he not taken steroids???? Now if he were to decimate Hank Aarons record by 100 homeruns then I'd have to say that Yes, he is home run king. But if he bypasses Ruth and Aaron by less then I'd have to say he probably would not of broken the record had it not been for roids.
I got *****ed because I stocked up and paid some decent cash for alot of his rookie baseball cards. Topps, Fleer, Donruss, ToysRus etc. Might have to put them in the same bin as my OJ Simpson football cards. And Felipe Alou. I have baseball cards form like 1973 of the three alou brothers. Felipe, Jesus and Matty.

That's cool about the Alou cards, hold onto those...
The market for Barry Bonds rookie cards will truly be tested 5 years after his retirement from baseball, so for now, hold on to every single rookie card of his you can...When he is out of the game for awhile, you will truly know the market of Barry Bonds rookie cards...right now its all speculation....
He would have not broken any of the records if it wasnt for steroids...he would have hit in the 550 range based on his past stats from 1986-1998...I truly believe that! It was because of the 1998 HR chase with Mcguire and Sosa that he turned the corner for the worse as far as his steroid intake. You may wanna give the book "Game of Shadows" a read when you get a chance, its one of the best books I ever read and I aint much of a book reader...still enjoyed it though, no doubt.....

WOW! you've got oj simpson cards?
now i thought for sure they'd be worth something to someone,
afterall not EVERYONE thinks he's guilty  (personally i'd like to see them)
as far as bonds being any good who really knows when he "started"
using besides him himself and i wouldnt believe him.
bottom line is like you got 500 b4 roids and the rest after?
a cheats a cheat none of them should count - too bad so sad as lynn would say.
i realize maybe when he "started" enhancers may not have been illegal but
jeez take a vitamin its like those goshdarnit
pinch runners - you cant run? oh well put someone else in for you we
only need you to get to first!
i love baseball/softball but the idea of winning being the only thing is bullschnikes as far as i'm concerned - play the game as a team - each player
carrying his own weight (literally) haha and
who ever can pull it together the most wins!

The ESPN Page 2 staff did a very thorough analysis of Bonds home runs since 1999 and estimated that about 83 of them would not have been possible pre-steroids. It's long, but actually quite readable and very impressive:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=hruby/060512
I tried to cut and paste it in here, but it would take too long to format it to look good. 616 sounds about right to me.

However if Willie Mays, in my opinion the greatest all around player who ever lived (and I'm a die hard Yankee fan so it takes a lot for me to say that!) hadnt been in the army for 4 years we'd all be saying
Hank who? Barry who??? :)
Agreed on Say Hey Willie Gregg. And I have some of his baseball cards too.
Actually a pretty valuable collection because I got lots of autograph balls. Some I got from EBAY, some from memorbilia shoppes, some from Yankee fan fests I attended in the past etc. Dimaggio/Mantle autograph plaques, autograph balls ranging from $20 to $450 in value. From the lots of players from the likes of Jimmy Key, Joe Carter, J.R. Richard, Joe Dimaggio, Willlie Mays Mickey Mantle etc. I don't even have it on display. Its all shoved in a cedar chest and storage containers gathering dust in the corner of a cool and dry spare room. Football cards too. Archie Manning rookie card. When he looked younger then his sons Peyton and Eli. Mean Joe Green, Jack Tatum, Bart Starr etc.
I actually told my step son that if he could find a way to sell off the collection he can have the money for college. I put alot of time into it in the past but the card market flooded in the early 90's and kind of ruined it. But I told him they have to be sold off on EBAY, card shows or something like that because if you cash the whole thing at a dealer you won't get near what its worth. They only pay depending on their demand for aquiring certain items.
Everybody always says my Mom threw out my cards when I was younger. I said "Mama, keep dem mitts off my cards".
And by the way Greggo. We won last night! 10-8. Beat Marios Pizzeria. Team was formed by a former defector from our team. So with a 3-5 start we are certainly looking better then the 4-18 record we ended up with last year. But last years record was an exaggeration. Were alot better team then that.

these pitchers are just going to start seving him up meatballs to crush just so they can get there names in the record books. most of todays pitchers are so bad. he is such an arrogant f**k that even satchel paige would have played chin music with him. how i would love to see him face people like bob feller or steve carlton, or even a young(1969) nolan ryan. he would have been knocked out cold of not for good reflexes.if i were pitching against him i would be ejected constintly for drilling that oversized piece of sh**! and if he cared to dance on the mound i would take his yam bags and stuff them down his throat. i really cant stand todays baseball players. to me babe ruth is still the home run king, roger maris still holds the mark for most in a season and bob feller is still the greatest pitcher of all time. he was only 17 pitching in the big leagues, going to school(high school that is) and then getting drafted to fight in ww2, and still coming back and having a lights out career.nuff said!!

Like I said before....Drysdale and Gibson would have given him some "sweet chin music" GUARANTEED. Nobody likes being shown up and sh*t on. And Bonds is a master of that on BOTH counts. Also, they mentioned when he hit #715, only ONE person(besides his son) was there at the plate to meet/congratulate him. Further evidence on how big a ***** he is.

Hank passed Babe legitimately and took alot of black flak for it including death threats. Bonds should just retire as I've done with a shit load of his rookie BBC's.
The Babe was the Best!
And whats this Roger Clemens getting 13 mil for the season when its 1/3 the way over???? I was discussing this with my stepson. Break it down to say 26 starts and thats $500,000 a start no matter what the outcome. Then my stepson chuckles, Hee hee, it takes you 5 years to make what he makes in one night! Smartass!!!!! Laugh when you have to take out stucent loans in college!!! I might not be no Roger Clemens but I can still do math!
And get this Greggo!
Our softball team is on a 3 game winning streak. We beat a couple of good teams too! We are now 5W-5L. Already more wins then all of last season! :)

Another game tonite if it doesn't rain. It feels good when after the game you shake hands with the Hulk Hogans on the other team knowing you just handed their butts to them. Crushing the ball isn't the only part of the game. Gotta play good defense too. Though the Hulk Hogans, when they don't get the ball out of the infield, are easier to turn double plays on because they are usually not as fast. :)

wouldnt be surprised if the field was saturated from yesterdays rain...at least in my neck of the woods.
Might be called off? No call from coach yet as to whether its called off. With 14 teams in the league this year and only three different fields used, the Umps try their best to squeeze the games in yet avoiding injuries. We already have two guys out for the season. Scott ripped a hammy pretty badly a couple games ago. Angel broke a rib earlier in the season.
