Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.

How true this is. Unlike the Immigrant of yesterday the Immigrant of today doesn't want to adhere to any of these statements that Roosevelt requests. They just want to come here to make American money and head back home with it eventually.
Many years ago I rented an apartment from a Turkish couple. They could afford to buy a house here, at the time I could not afford a house of my own. They also owned a Dry Cleaner/Tailor business in Manhattan. At the time my husband was having difficulty getting a job and I had just had my second child, so I was not back to work yet.
Believe it or not this couple were in an arranged marriage and the wife told me she was never too happy about that. The husband wanted to come here to make a lot of money. She did not, but came to America with her husband, as she had no choice. When they got here, she decided to make the best of it and went to school for 2 years to learn English, he too went to school to learn English, but quickly dropped out. She made it no secret that it was her intention to someday return to Turkey with her American made money.
I always found this disturbing as I saw more and more businesses being bought by Immigrants. The Immigrant of yesterday came to America because they wanted a better life, a life they knew they could never have in their country. The thought of going back to their homeland was never in their plan. America was now their homeland and they were proud and happy to be living here and most made it their business to become American citizens.
I don't know when things started to change and people who were new to our country decided they wanted to live here without wanting to be an American.

Problem is, the second you tell people that illegal Immigrants are a problem, right off the bat you get called a racist, which clearly has nothing to do with the issue. I'm not a racist; I don't base my opinions on some kind of narrow-minded hatred or whatnot, assuming that anyone from another country is inferior (far from it); I base it on the principle of equality. If you want the benefits of American citizanship (hospitals, schools, etc.), then you need to have the same responsibilites. All Americans need to contribute to the economy. Yes, that means paying taxes. Besides, those who come in illegally are an insult to those immigrants who work so hard to get in legally and make a life for themselves in our country.

When my mom was alive, she worked at our local hospital as an administrative billing cashier for over 20 years! She used to tell me stories about how alot of immigrants came into the hospital to have babies etc. and complain about their bills. They would have their younger children be the interpreter or claim "no speak English" so they would try to get out of paying their bill. She used to get so mad and say to their faces that they should learn to speak English after all if we went to their country to live they'd have some level of expectation for us to learn their language.

What also made her angry is that immigrant women were having babies for a considerable amount less than what we'd have to pay be it being on welfare or otherwise. That is completely crazy! Believe it or not the hospital she worked at was NOT a city hospital. The hospital's theory is that no one should be refused healthcare.

My mom had diplomatic moxy! :)

When I was living in LA, I worked for a company that employed a lot of foreignors. Most went through the needed steps to become US citizens, some were actually refugees from horrible situations. the ones that were there during my employment that were not yet citezens were in the process of taking steps to become citizens, and we, as a company would celebrate their success.

The thing that did bother me, out there, were the multitudes of people that chose not to bother going about things the proper way, living way way above average. In L. A. that takes more than an average income.

I guess if they would just make sure the ones that they let slip by go through the process, fine them heavily for not following the law, and start watching the new ones, things would not be so bad.

i couldn't believe the high school in texas made up mostly of hispanics, that wanted to fly the mexican flag above the texas flag. us, mexico, texas. i don't think so. if "foriegners" "illegal aliens" whatever, are so proud of their "homeland" then go back. i don't see these people rushing to return to the countries they fled from. but soon after getting here they want us to accomodate them. bottom line, if you move to a new country learn the language and get a job. become a productive citizen!! :eek:
