New York City Mayor Fires Worker
(02.10.06- AP) — Mayor Michael Bloomberg isn't playing games. After he saw a game of solitaire on a city employee's computer screen, he fired him.
The Republican mayor stopped by the city's legislative office in Albany a few weeks ago when he was visiting the state Capitol to hear the governor's State of the State address.
Office assistant Edward Greenwood the Ninth was going over some papers at his desk as Bloomberg made the rounds with his photographer, greeting workers and posing for pictures.
When the mayor reached him, Greenwood stood, they shook hands and the photographer snapped a photo. But the eagle-eyed mayor noticed Greenwood's game of solitaire glowing on his screen.
He said nothing about it to Greenwood but later told an aide to give him the ax.
What's the general opinion about this??? I'm at work right now, goofing off on the computer. Glad I don't work for Bloomberg!!!!!!!!!

I think it's chicken shit. He could of at least confronted him in person or given him a warning. Maybe he had it coming before the solitare incident.....

But, sometimes there's a lull in your work day, and you are sitting there twiddling your thumbs, so what's the harm in playing solitare or doing something personal at work, if all work is done for the time being? It's unrealistic to expect someone not to play the game, if it's in their computer already. Jobs are sometimes very stressful and you need to have a break to re-group. Also, Bloomberg went about it the whole way, I agree it was a chicken sh*t way to do it. He's the mayor - he should have confronted the guy personally instead of shaking hands with him and then canning him and publicly speaking out about it. I think if employers do not want their workers to use the games on their computer, than the employers should remove it from their hard-drives altogether. There are people that just are total goof-offs at work, don't get me wrong, but if no one is being hurt or taken advantage of, than I don't see a problem.

They should be lucky the network isn't equipped with software to monitor EVERY screen.

This gentleman should have been given a warning. Firing him could be entertained if he continued to use the computer for personal activity. I feel that was a bit harsh. AND why be so "kind" as to wait until you were out of the picture to give that order Mr B? It certainly didn't enable the employee to save face as it was publicized after the fact.

your 100% right!
if your doing YOUR job the computers wouldnt have this ability if
it was such a crime!
we HAD internet at my job and some guy was watching porn and
looking at gun websites! he was spoken to (i think thats a little more
severe than solitare!) and now we all dont turn our backs on this guy
and are prepared to dive under our kevlar enforced desks if the occasion
arisies! ahhh-haaaaaaaa!
Not unrealistic to expect someone not to play the game if its on their computer. I've always had it on my laptop nad have never played it.
Its one boring game.
But then like someone else said, Bloomy should of confronted the person himself. If it were me he fired, I certinaly would would of tracked him down and confronted Bloomy.
They ought to just put boxing gloves on him and Spitzer and let them beat the shit out of each other. Through Hilary in their for for a few good low blows too.
Now how many of you folks post from work????????????
