I had to post this thread because sometimes people go through such extremes I think it is really very appalling!

On Thanksgiving night my wife and I watched this movie with Arnold Schwartzenhager. It was about XMAS and he had to get a TURBOMAN doll. While I thought the movie was kind of funny, its sad to see it become reality like during the 'Tickle Me Elmo' or 'Cabbage Patch' crazes.
Then the next day I put on the news broadcast and see stories like people sleeping out overnight at stores for Friday after Thanksgiving sales. One store in NYC had a stampede recorded on camera. Shoppers knocking others to the floor and running over them. Like friggin cattle for god sake!
Then there's these people who pack into one specific gas station to save 3 cents a gallon. Lines strecthing out into a main intersection or roadway causing a traffic hazard. Then buy 12 gallons and save 36 cents. Lets risk my vehicle and my well being for the price of a stamp.
My stepson has the right attitude. When I seen something on TV for IPOD, I said, "I bet you'd like one of them eh?". He says "AH! wait first. Give it a few months, you'll get it for 1/3 the price". Theres a smart man!

The movie you watched was called "jingle all the way" and I happen to think its a pretty good Xmas film. While Christmas Story, NL Xmas Vacation, and Nightmare Before Xmas are my favorite Xmas movies, Jingle...is a decent movie....

I went to Best Buy on Black Friday 3 years ago and I will never do that again....at least 5-10000 people outside the store, pushing their way in, I threatened at least 3 people to get their hands off of me to push in the store or they were gonna be handless, and 2 hours to pay for my items....they must BLOW ME AWAY with an offer or I am sleeping in that day for damn sure!!!

I always said this world was going to hell in a handbasket and after seeing what I saw on the news last Friday, I think my statement might be true........and then of course, to what happened to 2 members of our msg board family right near Thanksgiving and I think it may happen sooner than you think!!!!

BTW a postage stamp is 37 cents and going up to 39 cents in January!
I agree with you. There is no "true spirit of Christmas" when you are hurting others for your own selfish gain. That's not what this holiday is all about. I remember one year telling my kids that there would be no presents for them. After all, it is Jesus' birthday. I suggested that we bake him a cake and sing Happy Birthday. Of course I was teasing them, but I wanted them to realize that while it is nice to receive presents, there is more to this holiday than that. I could never want something that badly to camp out in front of a store or get up at 3 AM to "catch" that great sale.
One of my favorite things to do is to take one of the names off the church Christmas tree and buy something really nice for someone in need. It's a nice feeling to imagine what their face must look like when they open something that they wanted and didn't expect they'd receive. This year Christmas is very light for me and I am very thankful for that. I expect a quiet holiday, but a happy one!

I always buy a gift for a needy child every Christmas, this year I choose a boy and a girl, could you believe the number 1 thing on both their lists was a blanket? Its so sad. I told my daughter and she said "pick another child for me", (she works 2 jobs now so she's able to sponsor one on her own as well). I was so proud of her when she said that. We take a lot for granted!

in America children are spoiled beyond belief with
materialistic goods - hence "black friday" insane/crowds/people.
although ultimately i like to think each parents motivation is good
(they want to get thier kids what thier kids want) but i too
agree that it is completely ridicoulous and do not agree with that
method of parenting, therefore i know the insanity that exists
and comfortably stay home on this day - what will i save?
ill definitely lose a few years of life due to the stress and its only money,
whatever i could save would not make me or break me.

Once again, it's the new generation where the Children are raising the parents.

Love is something that is not store bought.....greed is the fuel. Envy is the motivation. I hear it all the time "Well little Richard is getting the new Xbox with all the new games, a new Ipod...." I feel like walking up to this lady and "SMACK" upside the head. Spoil the kids now, that's what they end up later. One day a few years back my wife and I were in line at Target. This lady was pushing a cart full of stuff, for her older son (must've been 17 or so). She is pushing the cart, he is leading. She is talking to him while unloading the stuff on the counter. He is mouthing back to her and rolling his eyes to her. The stuff she was buying was for him. It was a 20 LCD tv, A DVD player, a Xbox game system, and some various stuff. He was going away to college and she was buying stuff for his dorm. My wife noticed the huge rock on her finger, as I whispered "let's follow them to their SUV". Sure enough, we spotted her loading up his gems in the back of a mountianeer, with leather, sunroof, all the bells and whistles of a white rich family with a non productive son. So bad I wanted to follow them home, but chances are they live in a gated subdivision. It is sh!t like that, that ruin the christmas spirit. I can hear the boy at christmas time "MOM, I SAID I WANTED THE RED HUMMER, NOT THE BLUE ONE, YOU STUPID BITCH".

Sometimes, it just looks like a case of the "children" have one or two people in the house who happen to be older than them.

Bargains.......sometimes, you just have to think and set your priorities. From what I've seen on the news, is all this BS worth your health OR your life?

I had to be at Wal-Mart to "count the people in line" for my job. Wal-Mart advertised opening at 5am. I got there shortly after 4am, and the doors were open. People were allowed in to line up at the pallets of merchandise that was advertised. The other, smaller items, people were lined up at the photo counter, etc. until 5am when they were allowed to purchase the hot items. It was definately more organized and calmer than what I saw on the news stations.
After hanging around, observing about all I could relay to the Merchandising people at Best Buy, I took a ride down to Fry's electronics to try and take a shot at getting one of the $14 DVD players. It looked like all the checkouts were operating, and the line to check out zig-zagged throughout the store with an estimated 250-300 people in line to check out. I'm glad I didn't find any of the cheapie DVD players, cos' I probably would've tried standing in that line.

Thats why this statement was made up older folk

'When I was a kid, we had to ........
'When I was a kid, all we had was ......'

When my mom was alive she and I started doing this almost 10 yrs. ago. It was quite rewarding and the things the kids ask for are so simple. Now since she has passed away, Jeff and I continue that tradition and get a boy and a girl each year. It's sad when you see all these kids want is a doll, boots, gloves, a bike etc. I remember one year Jeff and I got this little boy who only wanted Dinosaur figures. We went to KB Toys and bought him like 6 playsets - it's just a rewarding experience and in my opinion what Christmas is REALLY about.

And we sure do take a lot for granted. I know I'm changed after having my house robbed.

My wife and I found a hospital that has "Little Angels". The children write down what they would like in a cute little ornament, sometimes they would include their picture. We keep the ornament and hanging it on our tree to remind us each year who we've helped.

One year, we went crazy and took like 5 angels for ourself. Nearly $500.00 in gifts, the money meant nothing but knowing a face had a smile on it come Christmas morning, was well worth it. Usually these are the sick children or homeless ones. I don't do any other programs then that.

However sometimes picking a tag from the tree for the less fortunate kids can be tricky. I had this dilemma one year. This is going back to the cabbage patch years. The child I picked for wanted a cabbage patch. Sometimes its easy to tell.

Tameka = 99% of the time is a black girl
Nathanial - 95% of the time is a black boy.
Matthew - 90% of the tuime is a white boy
Lucy - 95% of the time is a white girl

I stood there in front of the display of cabbage patches to pick out a doll for this little girl. Her name was Trisha. That can be either race. Then I looked and seen black cabbage patch and white cabbage patch dolls. What do I pick??????

Oh, and just to put an end to that undecisiveness. I got her a doll of both races.

Now Santa would of know her race! :D

i get a little preterbed by everyone vying together to donate
gifts and food at thanksgivng and christmas -
what about the rest of the year?
my office adopts a family every year and they send around the profiles
of like 11 families and we all have to vote on which family we sponsor-
when i get the list instead of a # i write "whoever wins"
come on people - there are those in need allll year long,
if we really want to make a difference we should donate food/clothing
once a month or every three or so - regularly - not just at
christmas/holiday time!
yes every little bit counts, but in 2006, think about filling
someones stomach or warming them with a jacket or clothing
throughout the year - most churches will pick up donations
and it doesnt take much gas or effort to drop anything off at a local parish.
how about a new years resolution of such
(if you need to make one for yourself - stop waiting and start tomm!)

"Enter at the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it".

i would rather see these type people put out of business than have them continue to celebrate Christmas for ALL the wrong reasons!! afterall, Jesus is the reason for the season. if it wasnt for His birth, there would be no Christmas at all!!!!!

Were just following tradition.

Believe me, if they ruled no more gift exchanging on XMAS I'm fine with that. Keep me from going broke, plus dealing with the stress of holiday shopping.

Just give me a Turboman and I'll be happy!

I'm SO in agreement with you Mark. StiX and I could go on another vacation with the $ we'd save - especially with having nieces and nephews now!

I also think how people choose to incorporate keeping "Christ in Christmas" or choose not to incorporate keeping "Christ in Christmas" is a personal and private deicision.

just look at the spelling: C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S. If you take CHRIST out, all you have is MAS. Whats MAS without CHRIST? hence, "keep Christ in Christmas.

Just wanted to share this:

Charlie Brown says, "I won't let all this commercialism ruin my Christmas, etc. etc. Isn't there anyone who know what Christmas is all about?!"

(and I paraphrase)

Linus answers,

"Sure Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about - Lights please?

"And there were the same country shepards abiding in the field keeping watch over their flock by night - and Lo - the Angel of the Lord came upon them, and the Glory of the Lord shone long about them, and they were so afraid, and the Angel said unto them, 'Fear not for behold I bring you tidings of great joy which should be to all people - For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior - tis Christ the Lord - and this shall be a sign unto you. Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger' - and suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the Heavenly Host, Praising God, and saying 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth Peace, Good Will Towards Men' - That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown"

So, Merry Christmas to everyone, and a very Happy New Year.
