OK I like the Cars and I like Rundgren, but together?????

From www.melodicrock.com

THE NEW CARS ROLL OFF THE ASSEMBLY LINE:
And The New Cars are officially born. This was confirmed in a recent e-mail from Kasim Sulton to his mailing list. It reads:
"I guess it's safe to tell you all about the 'big announcement' now as most of you have put two and two together. I've accepted a position as the Bassist for a new incarnation of an old band ... The Cars! Currently being billed as "The New Cars". I know most of you are aware that Todd Rundgren has also signed on as the lead singer. Pretty cool huh? We've already recorded some new songs and are scheduled to be touring all next year (2006).
The line up is as follows, Todd, myself, Elliot Easton, Greg Hawks and Prairie Prince. We're planning to record a live CD/DVD sometime after the new year and a possible TV appearance before Christmas. So, thats what I've been alluding to for the past month or so and I'm really excited to be involved in this new project with a great bunch of guys. I'm sure we'll be doing shows near you and this is one show you really don't want to miss. I mean come on ... Todd and ME? Playing Cars songs? Hee hee!!!! It'll be like hearing them for the first time!
As soon as the publicity shots from the photo session we did are approved, I'll be putting them up here - www.KasimSulton.com."
The full line-up is: Todd Rundgren vocals, guitar; Kasim Sulton bass, vocals; Elliot Easton guitar, vocals; Greg Hawkes keyboards, vocals; Prairie Prince drums.
That's quite a line-up by anyone's admission. Yes, I'll definitely look forward to new material from these guys, but I'm still not sold on their choice of name. At least they aren't trying to use the original Cars name. Perhaps I could suggest Second Hand Cars as an alternative?

I'm going to stroll through Gramercy Park and try to get Ric Ocaseks opinion on the whole thing. The Cars won't be the same if Dave Robinson isn't on drums! If the new drummer so much as touches his ride cymbal, it's all wrong!

That sounds like a decent lineup, but man, I want Ric Ocasek to be in this band! I do agree, Dave Robinson should be in this band too....but I feel Ric should DEFINITELY be associated with this band IF they are billing themselves as "The New Cars." If they decide on a name change, if Ric doesnt want to be apart of this, I have no problem with that! BUT...if they are recording and touring as "The New Cars" well then Ric has to be apart of this band....Just my 2 cents...

I feel they shouldnt continue because NO BEN ORR. I think he was a much better singer than Ocasek. OK, they're not Zeppelin, but why do "The INXS thing". Ben will spin in his grave

In addition to malja and oldies.....
No RIC, No BEN...NO CARS!
Tell Eliot to go back to his pseudo CCR gig!

Nothing we can do about Ben at the moment, but if we can get the other orginal bandmembers back together for a tour, I would definitely be interested! I never seen them live in the 70's or 80's and would definitely welcome the chance to see them live this decade IF the remaining 4 would reunite...

I didn't know Kasim Sulton and Todd Rundgren still collaberated. Thats going back to the Utopia days of the late 70's - early 80's.

I did see Todd Rundgren touring with Joe Jackson earlier this year. Both acoustic except for a couple tunes they played together. I wasn't real impressed with his performance although he still has a pretty good voice. He's always been and still is a bit flaky.

Should be interesting to hear. As we go from the FLY to the FLAKE.

HELLO!!! IT'S ME!!!! I thought about this for a long long time and ya wanna know what I think??? I think they should do what they want and call themselves the "Pre-Owned Cars" and get Billy Joel to chauffeur them around. Of course you'd have to move all the houses and pizza restaurants and maybe every other tree to a different local, but hey, they'd still be in a New York state of mind!!!!!
I guess it's just what they needed!!!!

I agree - the 4 living members would be great together again.
I saw the original Cars back in the day at The Warehouse here in
New Orleans....They did a great show ....met them all briefly and
had them all sign a promo copy of the "Candy-o" album - unfortunately hurricane Katrina destroyed that piece of my music memorabilia
also....

Total and utter crap! Looks like another excuse for some "ex-members" to milk the public for sentiment(and their MONEY). Besides, I thought Easton was having fun playing CCR songs. Some of these reunions are ridiculous. I've never seen the Cars, but Ocasek being in the mix would be essential to make it go. Besides, a TRUE reunion would be with all membes, and with Orr dead.........

To tell you the honest truth, if this lineup does happen I don't see it lasting too long.

You may already know that Rundgren is on the strange side himself. I do recall reading an article about him & it stated that when it came to producing
music & albums he is a genius but he also is a control freak by his own admission. So as long as he feels like he is in control it might work out. I think
"Adventures in Utopia" is a least one of his best works, but again he had
total control of production. So if somebody in this New Cars group has
anything to add to pre production of their new album there may be some
problems in the studio. Also if T.R. still has his recording studio which I
believe he does that could add to the fire.

I agree - said almost the same thing on the "genesis reunion" thread - I do have to say, I am a big Todd Rundgren fan (strangeness and all) "Just One Victory" is one of my all time FAVORITE songs. Don't know why, but the song gives me chills when I hear the words - I still have it live on vinyl ! And still have a phonograph! I think I'm gonna pull out the old relics tonite and listen!

AHHHHHHH! INXS is gonna tour with that new guy JD Fortune.

Micheal Hutchence is probably rolling over in his grave right now.

I'd go for the Genesis "reunion" --- I've never see that incarnation, just the *watered down* one for the Mama tour(Collins, Rutherford and Banks).

The Cars.......hmmm.....no Ocasek among other key originals.....just as bad as Queen without Freddie and Deacon. Sorry, Rogers is a great vocalist, BUT.......

The Dman being a pretty big CARS fan from " back in the day" and I continue to listen their music today am not at all excited about this.
For one, no Ric Ocasek. Second, Ben Orr was probably my fav from the band especially lead vocalist and we all know that sad story.
I've seen them three times in my life, twice when they toured for Candy-o and then on the Panorama tour. They aren't really that good live at all.
They play their songs well, but only played slightly over an hour.
And this was for a show at the old Brendan Byrne Arena.
I believe I enjoyed the opening act more that night....Rockpile featuring Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds.
As Macca said......$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Not a good act Live? Then Rundgren ought to fit right in. Neither is he. At least not from what I seen earlier this year.

Guy comes out in a Phsyedelic silk shirt that almost looks like Sue's Avatar.

Dude! This is the 21st century!
