Great poll! Of the choices listed, I'd say Andy Summers. He influenced a lot of other rock guitarists (like Lifeson on the 80's Rush records starting with Signals ) and his style was very distinctive. One book I read stated that The Police inverted rock music by making the drums the lead instrument while Summers provided "color" to the over all sound. All I know is that I could listen to his atmospheric tone on songs like "Tea in the Sahara" and "Walking on the Moon" all day long. Plus he could riff-rock on songs like "Demolition Man" and "Synchronicity I" like a manic metaller when needed.
Another great guitarist who is sadly overlooked is Tom Verlaine of Television. Marquee Moon is one of the greatest Strat-fests ever captured on vinyl (or CD plastic now). Verlaine and Richard Lloyd where a great guitar duo as well - very complitementary in their styles.
Finally, just for pure, ringing electric guitar sound - Big Star's Alex Chilton and Chris Bell made some of the most beautiful music on albums like #1 Record and Radio City. The first album really has a great Byrds like sound - a style I really love. They aren't great technicians, especially Chilton who is a bit haphazard on the second album without Bell there to rein him in - but the "feel" of their playing is a thing of wonder. Pure pop music with lovely guitars - well worth exploring....
My 2 cents.
PS. Thin Lizzy had a great overlooked guitar tandem in Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson - check out "Live and Dangerous" for a great 70's guitar album.

I voted for Neal Schon!
And yes, Randy should've been in that poll choice as well!

While all guitarists get some sort of recognition, some don't get what they deserve. While some would say having the respect in their little musical corner means they are not underrated, I wouldn't agree with that. Yeah, they have some recognition, but they should have more. For me, those from the 70's that deserved more are Uli Roth, Michael Schenker, and Rik Emmett.

Randy Jackson or Pete Townshend (lots of acclaim for Pete's songwriting but no one ever mentions how good a guitarist he is...)
