From the May 30, 2005 issue of Newsweek Letters, responding to the "I Can't Live Without My Darling iPod" article from May 16:
Music is a blessing to us all. I'm a 35-year-old musician who loves technology. However, I don't have an iPod, I don't download music and I don't think I will any time soon. I keep buying CDs because of the liner notes and obscure tracks, and album-cover art, too. All these elements are lost with digital downloads. Also, I can't count the number of times I bought an album because of the single, only to lose interest in that track and develop a deeper appreciation for all the other songs. If we download only the singles we like, we miss the other 90 percent of the album and never leave our "musical comfort zone." I keep spending money on whole CDs. Now my only challenge is to build a bigger CD cabinet.
Mark Biery
Tucson, Ariz.
I certainly wish Mr. Biery were in the majority...unfortunately that is not the case. I also do not own an iPod and have never downloaded music. My CD collection is not around 3,000+ (Ronbo, how many do you have now?), probably closer to 500-600 with 400 or so albums. I certainly could use a nice CD cabinet (any recommendations of manufacturers?).

I don't own an I-Pod either, and have no plans to own one either. Downloading, my extent is seeking out "rare" recordings that'll NEVER see the light of day on CD to fill out my collection. And those who know me are aware how big it is already....
Don, record storage, question is.....how big do you want to go(and how expensive?)

Great article, thanks for sharing.... I shared it with my Produce and we had a long long talk.
I have no problem, with my tunes going on Appleitunes, Rhapsody, whatever... I have no problem putting High Octane Mp3's and my album art on my homepage when Accidental overdrive is done....
Selling singles may kill the big labels.... however, the whole reason New Napster is no big deal??? The kids and many listeners our ages 25-50 have no issue paying 59 to 99 cents for a tune, we like, and sparing ourselves the mediocre "filler songs" present on many new Lps coming out today.. saves the kids money, and the rest of us bullshit.... then there are music lovers to the level of you people, you hear the tune, like the artist, and have no issue buying the entire CD once you got a taste of what it includes.
Thru CD baby and my new people, I will have the CD's and downloads of my singles avaialable for all the differing tastes in music listener's media choices.
I have no problem with a kid that likes Venus FLy trap and Tell me, and My newest take me, and hates the rest... paying $3 and downloaning my cover art, making a CD of my tunes they do like.... I have no problem with folks streaming my stuff, taking the one for free I will have up, then ordering a CD.
There is a happy medium to the artist getting just rewards, and the listener allowed to be choosy.
New challenge? Artists need to employ whatever measures within and with others to make more than one good ****ing song, and putting out 20 crappers to accompany.
Just my thoughts.
thanks for the link!

My biggest problem with "modern" downloading is twofold: First, some of the companies (like I-Tunes) want you to load additional software(translation...SPYWARE). Second.....some use formats that WILL NOT allow you to burn to a disc. Kinda weird considering you're PAYING to get it. Shouldn't you be able to burn it to a disc to listen instead of just on your computer or a portable device? Sorry, guess my age is showing......

Macca, agreed, I would like to get a copy of JF Murphy & Salt's "Last Illusion" and I think the only way may be to download.
Record storage...give me some options. I have seen some that are rather expensive, but the ol' saying is "you get what you pay for".

Two options come to mind for storage:
The Cube www.lorentzdesign.com (800) 933-0403
Can-Am www.cdcabinet.com (800) 387-9790
The smaller of the two(and the first to come out) was the Cube. I have 3 of them and "no assembly" required.
