i just saw a commercial about 80's bands trying to make a comeback on a reality show. it premieres on thursday. Among them, if i remember right > tommy tutone, loverboy, the knack, vanilla ice. who else? who do you want to win? i think the show is called "hit me baby one more time" NBC

Kinda surprised NBC *actually* showing some rock music instead of all these wanna bees. The Eagles tonight.....tomorrow the "hit" show. Maybe there is hope.

Loverboy - comeback? They never really went away and still perform probably 40-50 concerts a year (June 25 - Six Flags - New Orleans). I videotaped them three times in the past couple of years. A friend of mine is a close, personal friend of the band.

Eagles were great on TV last night. Although I have to say, with all the commercials they left alot of tunes out. Lots of each persons solo work was left out too. When I seen them a month ago They played for almost 3 hours and did twice as many tunes as NBC aired.

Now why doesn't zebra get on a show like the one airing tonight? They're not just one hit wonder bands. Zebra is from the eighties. Most people are fiamiliar with a few of their bigger hits. I bet there are lots of people out there that don't even know they are still together. And they would probably win hands down. Would of been a prime opportunity to showcase themselves relatively low cost. I believe besides an old tune the bands do a new tune. Well, Zebra just released a new album about a year or two ago so theres some material eventhough alot of the songs were written earlier.

Now if Loverboy comes to Jersey six flags that would be cool! Gonna have to check their schedule. Great Flags New Jersey also has brand new
KINGDA KA!!!!!!!!!!! Tallest rollercoaster in the world. Forty five stories high. They say when you get to the top on a clear day you can see the NewYork Skyline from Jackson New Jersey some 40+ miles away. But not for too long because once you reach the top the ****er drops at a 90 degree angle spiraling downward. Like jumping out of an airplane. And the hydraulics jet you to start the ride from 0 to 128mph in 3.5 seconds. Like driving a Indy 500 car. I am so on this ****er this summer!!!!!

This site has a virtual ride on it.

Its an adrenaline Rush. The ride is so quick that its over just like that, almost before you can even get the opportunity to scream.
I use to love Freefall at Great Adventure. That was the one where you would ride up in a car on your back abiout 250 feet up. Then the car gets shoved out on a ledge. Then the floor drops out and you go straight down. There was no line at Great Adventure for this thing years ago because no one wanted to ride it. The guy let me stay on. I did it like a dozen times.
My sister is trying to get me to jump out of a plane right now but I'm not thrilled about having to go tandem the first three times as a beginner. Two of my three sisters love these kind of rides. Of course though, one jumps out of a plane.

And if you ever get out to Vegas, try that coaster atop the Stratosphere. Awesome!

Yes I just watched that poor excuse for a show. Shouldn't blame the show. Just the bands. The bands had to play their old hit and a cover tune. Nobody impressed me tonight and I wasn't even expecting much. I say Zebra should go on with Tell Me What You Want and one Zep cover and the audience would be totally blown away !!! :D

loverboy - didn't sound good on "working for the weekend". Could have been the sound, or monitors. I'm guessing that the sound wasn't the best and the singers were thrown off a bit. Loverboy sounded pretty good on their cover of "hero"

Flock of seagulls was awful. Again, maybe the sound, but it seemed he lost his ability to hold notes. I didn't like their rendition of "on the way down" by ryan cabrerra.

CeCe penniston - okay i guess; i heard a few bum notes. Didn't come close to singing like faith hill though.

Dare i say it - i enjoyed arrested development. It may have been the females dancing, the vibe, and/or the vocals were on. I'm no rap fan, but they seemed positive, energetic, unique.

Tiffany - man, she's got boobs now. I thought she was pregnant, but she has a little pooch belly. On her hit, it sounded like > "i think we're alone n...". I never heard her say "now"; irritating. I think she strained to get that kelly clarkson song out. Again, maybe the p.a. wasn't up to par?

macca
06-03-2005, 12:51 AM
Loverboy - Reno looked like a bloated pig....and sounded like it too.

Flock - Only original member is Mike Score. Looks like the "reunion" went sour after doing the VH-1 thing and a tour(maybe the Score brothers aren't speaking again?)

CeCe - WHO CARES?

Arrested Development - DITTO

Tiffany - Dream you're 15 and go back to the mall. Ryank....she's "big" now thanks to the surgeon(check out the Playboy spread and the Howard Stern show if they air it again).

If this is what NBC needs to fill in weeks before the "new" season begins, they're in BIG trouble. If any of these networks think "reality" TV will sustain ratings, they're smoking something funny; and I want NO part of that!

I watched the show last wek. I agree, it was really bad!!! But, I'm a fan of the 80's music. Somehow, I have to watch anyway. Plus, it's like a trainwreck. You don't want to look, but you HAVE to. Besides, it's always fun to see that if you don't stay in the limelight and work on yourself to stay looking the way you did when ytou broke through, that real life hits everyone and they get fat and bald and everything else. For that, I also ahve to watch. As far as Tiffany goes, I believe she had a baby not long ago, which would explain why she looked like she did. But yeah, regardless, she did have a boob job a few years back. A redhead with big boobs....gee, there's a bad combination!!!

From Melodic Rock.com--
HIT ME BABY NO MORE TIMES:
"I asked Jack Blades about Night Ranger's decision to ditch their scheduled appearance on the NBC show Hit Me Bay One More Time. His reply: "We were too busy doing our new CD and we ran out of time...".
Good decision Jack...we want that new CD done and having watched the show myself, I have to think that Night Ranger would have been out of place on the show. It was a serious cheese-fest and even though I enjoyed seeing Loverboy perform (their cover of Hero was very good), I don't think this show is going to do too many artists any favors. And what about the host? Yikes! " Personally I would like to know- Where do they get the ideas for the bands ?? And I agree that the host is the WORST !!! The networks are so hard up for a hit show they will try anything !!! REALITY SHOWS ESPECIALLY BITE !!

Didn't you see that coming Gregg? Vanilla Ice and that 'Ice Ice Baby' song won before the show even started. I personally think the song ****s. Its like fusing Rap with a bad rendition of notes stolen from David Bowie and Queen's 'Under Pressure'. I think its a cheat because first off, this guys hit was more recent then all the other bands, (I think it was around 1993). More up to date, more with the in crowd. Secondly, look at all the drooling little adolescent girls in the audience. We have 2005 youngsters voting for early 80's tunes. Lots were still in diapers when them tunes came out. Take the votes in age group bracketts and I'm sure you'll see entirely different results. People are not only weighing in the performance and showmanship but also the fact that 'These are the songs I grew up with' mentality. Its interesting to watch the talents at this later date. Yet everything else, including that host with the big chompers and bangs parted to the side looking like a foriegn 70's **** Clark reject

The Knack should of won. They did a decent job on My Sharona and a 1/2 decent job on the JET song too.

If the last two weeks show anything, it shows that the majority of the music buying(or some stealing) public has their taste in mouth ONLY. Arrested Development, then that jive a$$ phony Vanilla Ice? GIVE ME A BREAK. This show proves why the music industry is in the gutter and is gasping for breath. No talent = sales. Right now, if you show any inkling of talent or ability to play an instrument, you're *****ed. Damn...I wish this bad dream would end.

i don't think they'd let zebra cover zeppelin; it has to be a current hit. I sure didn't catch on to the motels version of "don't know why" (nora jones). Maybe they thought if they punked it up, the kids would like it? yuk. I'm guessing that howard jones will be pretty good next week - i like his writing.

question - what current hit would you like to see zebra cover if they were on the show. I think he'd go after an elton john song.

Yep...for this show they sure aren't "saving the best for last". Still hard to believe Jones was in one of Ringo's All Star Bands. Jeesh....what are ya thinking Ritchie??

Funny....I always said digital was a Pandora's Box. Never thought it would turn into this.

Yeah, I agree. The cover song has to be a "recent" hit, although I haven't heard how recent it has to be. So far I believe all covers have been from 2000 to now.

Also, I don't think (besides the luck they've had in their career when it comes to radio/tv/media) Zebra could be on this show. Again, I believe the bands had to have a legitimate "hit" in their career. I'm not so sure it had to be a #1 hit, but maybe top 10. Anyone know about this for sure???

But, if they COULD be on the show, I'd think they'd do a cool version of Gavin DeGraw's "I Don't Wanna Be".

Ah Zebra can tell them they are doing this then do something else. That is if its a live reality show. Whatta they gonna do, kick em off the stage?

If some of the crap we heard on there so far are legitimate hits then hold tight guys. I feel some gas coming on. This ones gonna top the charts!

How Recent Does It Have To Be??? The Knack Did A Song From 1 Or 2 Years Ago!!! "All The Small Things" Was At Least A Year Old...
Zebra Could Do "Here Without You" From 3 Doors Down... There's Plenty Of New Rock Out There Zebra Could Do!!!

Fox would probably allow a title like this > "Bands who got *****ed and lived to tell about it" ... who else would be on that list? Or, should there be a show called "how in the hell did they sell millions of records". The next logical step for a reality show is for bands to compete playing original songs - no age limit. I'd love to be a judge on that show.

Unfortunately Ryank, my number one candidate got disqualified because they did NOT live to talk about it. Two of the members committed suicide 10 years apart due to the shaft they got(Badfinger - Pete Ham and Tommy Evans). The only redeeming factor is that 2 survived and I don't think they want to keep the wounds open.

NBC must be desperate for ratings: a 2 hour showing tonight, and the usual time slot on Thursday. Must see crap TV!

Personally, I think ZEBRA is way too cool and talented to subject themselves to a TV show like this.

...Joey Molland from Badfinger could do a two-hour Storytellers special on this subject.

Hey, Macca...read this after I posted my other response. Right there with you...though Joey does keep the Badfinger 'legacy' out there.

Personally, I think ZEBRA is way too cool and talented to subject themselves to a TV show like this.

Though we actually tried to pursue the idea after learning about Night Ranger dropping out. Here was the response from Jeff Watson:

JEFF WATSON TALKS COMPLICATIONS BEHIND BABY ONE MORE TIME:
Subject of some debate last week was Night Ranger's decision to pull out of the NBC music program Hit Me Baby One More Time.
I contacted Jack Blades at the time, who offered the comment: "We were too busy doing our new CD and we ran out of time...".
But guitarist Jeff Watson hasn't left it there. He is sending out a rather excellent and detailed reply to anyone that enquires and I thought it important to feature that here. I confirmed that with Jeff, who replied: "Please feel free to post my response, as it's important for people to know how things work regarding TV, etc., so that rumors don't get started." So with that in mind, read on:
"Allow me to set this story straight, and feel free to share this with anyone or any site that may be misconstruing this issue.
Night Ranger was slated to appear on "Hit Me Baby One More Time" on NBC, and we had already interrupted our recording schedule to record and turn in to NBC the edited TV track of Sister Christian.
We also spent an entire day filming interviews and background video material to be used on the show.
What precluded us from being able to do the show at that time was that, as you know, the bands need to pick a second recent hit song by someone else to perform and we were without a second song.
We chose and re-chose, and submitted and re-submitted 7 to 10 songs to perform (from a list and guideline of songs provided us) that NBC couldn't get cleared to use. (all songs have to be cleared for use on Television, Film, etc.,. by the composer and publisher).
As of Friday morning, less than 48 hours before we were supposed to fly to Hollywood to film, NBC still hadn't cleared a song, and it would have been physically impossible for us to learn, re-arrange, re-record, and then perform live, someone else's song to any degree of our standard of professionalism and talent within that space of time.
The process of getting done all that we did in preparation for the show was a fun, mad scramble, and had we had enough time to get a second song together you would be seeing us on the program next week.
We're still slotted to go on the show if NBC picks up the program for future episodes, and we appreciate all the fans that want to see us, as well as recognize the importance of being out there in TV land for those that don't get to see us live in concert.
As we all learned from this experience, the process of clearing a song is somewhat painstaking, in that you must go through managers, agents, producers, publishers, writers, etc., and that is very time consuming. To their credit, the people associated with the show and NBC really went to bat trying to get the songs for us, and went out of their way to make the whole process as painless as possible.
They also worked hand in hand with us on the scheduling and logistics. It was simply a matter of bad timing, in that it fell over the Memorial Day weekend, and no one works in Hollywood around that holiday (or any other holiday), so there was no one available to get us the clearances, which cost us precious time.
We also learned that many people don't like to clear their songs for others to perform on TV. We picked a bunch of songs that we were going play the hell out of, only to be told that we couldn't use them. We got excited about every one of our picks, after listening and carefully considering how we would approach it, only to days later find out they weren't available. It was a little disheartening but we kept on trying.
Our pullout from this show is neither the fault of Night Ranger, Hit Me Baby One More Time, or NBC. This is one of those things that happens now and then in this business that's out of everyone's control, and no one is more disappointed in the outcome than I.
I sincerely hope this clears up any ongoing misunderstanding regarding this situation.
All the best, Jeff Watson / Night Ranger"

Nice post.

Even if Zebra appeared on the show, I don't believe that the crowd would pick them. The reason being that the young people in the audience have picked Arrested Development the first week and Vanilla Ice the second....both of those acts were closer to Rap music than any of the other performers.

It just seems like that is the type of music that the young public wants.....SAD.

However, it would increase public awareness of the band immensely!!! Something they sorely need.

If things weren't bad enough....they had to have an "encore" performance of that crap. Maybe they're trying to say that most of the "now" generation has the attention span of a gnat.
