I am listening to "Octavarium" right now, and all I will say is that THESE FRIGGIN' GUYS CAN DO NO WRONG...THIS, boys and girls, is the CD of the year IMHO.
:D
BTW, everyone's got their Pertrucci and Labrie solos, right?!

We have Labrie's solo CD - it kicks ass - different than DT that's probably why I like it!

Very intriguing. I've only got the CD with "Pull Me Under" on it so I'm way out of date on DT. I'll have to go someplace and give this a listen. Thanks for the heads up.

I have to disagree that this new DT CD is the cd of the year...
I am VERY disappointed in the 5 or so tracks I have heard from this CD...
Why in the BLOODY HELL does Jordan have electronic samples along with his keyboard parts? I feel these samples have ruined many parts of the songs I heard. The 2 John's, James, and Mike sound great on this CD but for some reason, I cannot get into Jordan's playing on this CD from the songs I heard and currently have in my possession...
I hope this CD is better than the 5 songs I heard...I felt the last 3 CD's were the bands strongest efforts by far...I can understand about trying something new but I feel the keyboard samples have got to go.....
I guess I will find out June 7th if this CD will prove me wrong.....God I hope so.......****s that with my 2000th post, I have to question a band I have been a huge fan of over the last 14 years and thought they could not put out a mediocre or bad CD considering how good the last 3 studio discs were.....

aahh, I'm still sticking behind this CD...the more I listen to it, the more I am appreciating the differences between this one and Train of Thought. The lighter stuff is very Falling Into Infinity-ish, but the rest is definitely well written and more mature than another balls-out assault. I'm not crazy about their timing after two solid solo CDs from Pertrucci and Labrie, but this is hands down an excellent release from a band that has yet to disappoint me with their direction.

I will definitely buy the CD when it comes out tomorrow and give it another listen or two. I really am sold on their last 3 CD's and feel they are a much better band when they play their heavier style...You can really hear the talent of Portnoy and Petrucci on those tracks...like for example, The Glass Prison. That song truly showcases DT in all its glory...

I Only Heard One Song On Eddie Trunk's Show This Weekend ( Boneyard - Xm )
Mike Portnoy Was In Studio And Being Interviewed And Remarking On The Cd...
I Could Only Listen For 5-6 Minutes And The Song Was About 5 Mins Long ( Short One For Them)...
It Rocked... Lotsa Power Chords!!! :D

it's so hard to pick a favorite. it all depends on my mood. sometimes i like harder/driving DT, other times the more mellow/melodic DT

it's like porn, sometimes it's time for a plot, sometimes lesbians only, other times you want the no-holes-barred jackhammer action

It always comes back to porn with you, doesn't it? ;)
BTW, you left your copy of Octavarium in my DVD player yesterday (thanks!) as well as some of your clothes in the dryer.

A Change of Seasons is a great track, unfortunately, on the studio recording that they did in 1995 of this song, Portnoy's snare annoys the hell outta me!!! But nonetheless, a great song and its even better when its played live...
gonna get my copy @ looney tunes after work tonight!

I would say so, I checked online and it said that the Patchogue store had copies in stock...since DT is being distributed on a major label, Best Buy will have a few copies of the new DT in stock....if you wanna pickup a band on an indie label, you should just buy it online or head over to Looney Tunes...DT usually has pretty good sales the 1st week the CD comes out so Best Buy would be a fool not to carry them....

well...i'm listening to the second song as i write this. just got my copy from best buy in patchogue. i took the ride out there because i was listening to "randy jackson's rock tracks" on the bone and the reception got better as i drove east. anyway...there were no copies of octavarium left on the shelf, so i asked a dude that worked there if he had anymore copies left. they started the day with 31 copies and had only a few left at 8pm. one of the other sales dudes said that he had been bringing copies out to the shelf all day and they were selling fast. thought that was cool. and, the sales dude who helped me said he had just watched the dvd of live at budokan...he really digs them and was gonna pick up a copy of octavarium himself. i guess not all kids have horrible taste in music!
i cant believe i just said that...i feel so old now

Like most adults, there are lots of kids out there who sick and tired of seeing all these horrific new bands that MTV and KRock shove down their throats as being the next big thing, only to be nothing more than a crappy ass band! The only way you get kids to listen to music is to promote the hell out of bands that dont get the proper promotion, such as Dream Theater. There is way more to life than hearing some crappy ass band like My Chemical Romance on MTV....god does that band ****!!!! sorry if you happen to like them.................
You would be amazed at how many kids out there dig some of the old school metal bands and some of the newer metal bands who stay "true to the game." They are the minority, but they are out there...just gotta keep promoting Dream Theater and other bands like Porcupine Tree, who are not as heavy as Dream Theater put definitely are a pretty good prog rock band who started out in the 1990's but have been getting noticed the last 2/3 years.....
im really diggin the 'octavarium' cd... so far these are the tracks that are sticking in my head:
3- these walls
5- panic attack
8- octavarium
7- sacrificed sons (listening to the words of this song gives me goose bumps-it is written about 9/11 and terrorism...very moving)
i HAVE to see this band live!

references to the #5 & #8? or, references to the subject matter of songs 5 (panic attack) and 8 (octavarium)? i noticed a recurring theme in the songs

the DT forum and MP forum are wayyyyy ahead on the subjuct, but there's oodles of references to "five" and "eight", whether it's the symbolisms on the cd liner booklet down to musical note structures in the songs...I personally liked the theory that the whole CD is an infinitesimal (is that spelled right?) circle, down to the opening and closing notes ("trapped inside this Octavarium")
I also thought that part, btw, was very MJKeenan-ish (remember "pry-ing-open- my-third-eye"?) and reading through the other forums, apparently I'm not the only one who thought of that! :)
