My wife is very famous in the dog show world. She travels around the world judging for the AKC.

Are you looking for a Dane? I was just in Bogota with a good Dane person who lives in Miami.

I can probably help.....

I never had one, but as a kid, I had a neighbor that had 2 of them (well 3, but one went with the ex-wife when they divorced, but I was so young at the time, I only remember seeing the dog once or twice. I'm sure I saw her more, I just remember a time or two). The first one he had since I can remember, which is about 3 years old. That one lived for 10 or more years. Then he got another one that he had here for maybe 3-4 years before he moved away. These dogs are big, but they were very gentle, and good with kids. For a long time, that first dog was taller than me on all his four legs. Later on, I wasn't that much taller than him. But, I was young then, and he never was rough in any way that I can remember. Loved to be pet, loved attention. But, they're dogs. Goes without saying. But, they don't realize how big they are. They like to run and jump and all other things dogs do. That freaks some people out with dogs that size. The second one was about a year old when my neighbor got him. Basically a puppy. Some puppy, he was almost full-grown by that time already. That one used to love to do run-bys. Meaning, he'd love to run by someone at top speed as close to you as he could get, but he never did touch you. Scared my mom half to death all the time. I loved it!!! He was fearless to, he'd do it while I'd mow the lawn, lawnmower roaring. Just ZOOOOOOM!!! But, if you don't mind the size of them and the fact they think they're puppies and want to be on your lap like any other dog, I'd recommend them. Very sweet animals.

It is true they dont realize how big they are. Their tail alone can wreak havoc throughout a house without them even knowing it.

I unfortunately had a bad experience with an crazy 13 year old dane a couple years back. Got attacked and arm wripped open. I blame the owners for not containing the dog. This is very old for a dane and they get senile.

My big dog is an Akita. Its a Japanese bear fighting dog. Big and strong.

Great Dane made great Beatles bootlegs back in the 80s - I have plenty of those!

ok guys! thanks! i knew that one would draw a few comments! haha
well dj dale thanks for the info, i'm sure
there are plenty of horror stories about every breed,
Akitas kick butt! (and so loveable too!)
love love love them but too much hair!
danes arent exactly short hair but less than an akita.
i believe if your going to have a dog its gotta be big- you
want a small dog? just get a cat, much less work!

i'm seriously comsidering a dane and i know their life expectancy
isnt much past 8-9 years, and they are great with kids,
im just a little concerned with the amount of exercise they need,
ive read the bigger the dog the less exercise/living space
(and ive got a lot of space) but both my husband and i work fulltime
and all these things must be considered, maybe you could ask your wife about the activity level of a dane ?
what type of lifestyle would best suit a dane?
i may be a new yorker, but im a slow, relaxed, no rushing type a gal!
thanks for the deets you rock!

rushtrader you love the beatles!
would you believe i only heard my 1st beatles album about
2 years ago (when i ws 31!)
disgrace i know! :o
but i love them!
after i heard randy play most of abbey road (my fave)
i had to get my hands on some tabs but some of that beatles
stuff is way tricky! (at least to a novice like myself)

evhfv thanks for the stories!
i hear danes are great around kids,
dont have any yet (if ever) ???

thanks again everyone and keep me "posted"
no pun intended.

OK...

My wife is a New York girl also. I've asked her your questions and this is what she said.....

"Danes need alot of room due to their size. In the house they bump into things and knock things off tables, especially when they are youngsters. They are good with the family and watchful of strangers. Depending on the breeding they can be spooky and snap at strangers if not well socialized.

They are a big powerful dog and need to be trained. If you put the time and effort into raising the dog right it will be a good pet. Also, you should get one from a very reputable source. Do not get one from a pet store or some backyard breeder who's stock if from pet stores. You will not know what you are getting genetically or what to expect down the line. There are many good breeders around that would help you with a dog."

Hope this helps...
Dale

PS. My wifes name is Linda Stebbins Hurlebaus. Here is a link to her credentials as an AKC judge.

SCOOBY!!!!!

Great Danes seem like the coolest of dogs! If I ever get a dog, that is what it will be. They're expensive, but they are supposedly some of the best people dogs you can get. Good luck! ;)

I prefer the bull terrier (Spuds McKenzie and Meatball from TV's Baa Baa Black Sheep, but Great Danes are pretty cool too.

Claire Dane(s) is awfully nice as well.

thanks dj im kind of in a rush but i will look at your wifes site!
with such a large dog i would only purchase from a reputable
breeder and definitely not a pet store.
your the best!

my brother has a bull mastiff (huge),
shes young and he has trained with her - shes loveable but powerful,
never anything but sweet and obedient!
its gotta be! especially with a large dog!

thanks again!

The link wasnt to her website. Just a listing of all the different breeds she can judge. Not many people in the world can judge as many breeds as her.

If you need names of good breeders in your area I'm sure my wife can locate a good one for you.

Good luck!

Right now we've got....4 cats.....1 140 lb. Akita, 2 golden retrievers, and 2 Lhasa Apsos (one is pregnant). Our house stays hectic.....

Especially the BBC Box!! :D

Yeah - that 11 disc redone BBC box is just amazing. Now why exactly I have dozens of hours of Let It Be outtakes is still a mystery, even to me.

For those in NY who listen to Breakfast With The Beatles on Sunday mornings, I have been supplying them with all kinds of new stuff lately, so listen for some amazing new things over the next few weeks.

Macca - what do you think of the Anthology Directors Cut 10 DVD set?

I'm still tying to get some kind soul to do a Blanks/Postage deal for the set(I'm still DVD burnerless). They had a tree going, but it collapsed.

The Let It Be stuff......you, me and a whole bunch of others are just anally retentive. We just have to hear all the stuff, no matter how monotness/boring it is! I suppose we're hoping to find that lost gem or holy grail.......

just curious - very interesting indeed

my husband and i need to discuss the dog thing a little more
before i start seeking breeders b/c once i do its all over! :D
he definitely loves the danes too,
i want to get a few dogs really, i mean , if you have one you may as well have 2 or 3!
my cousin is trying to get me to adopt a greyhound that they retire

Best dog I ever had was my pit. They have a bad rep because so many are trained wrong. If you train them right they're big mushes. Second fave was my Golden when i was a kid. Also had a German shep. When I was married I bought my ex a Brittany Spaniel for Christmas. That was a cool dog too. Now I live in an apt. and I work full time so no dogs. If I ever get another dog I'm getting another pit.
