God bless their familes, and rest in peace. Another tragedy in America. I can't believe it! :(
Well said. This is so scary.

It's amazing we live in a world when any major tragedy that happens has to be viewed that terrorism was maybe a possiblity. That's not the case here, yet, but I'm sure it will eventually be looked into. Like jets and the Concord, it looks like shuttles also have a "shelf life". I remember the Columbia making it's first flight, and was even featured in to MTV classics of the day, Rush's "Countdown", and Rainbow's "Can't Happen Here". That was 1981...over 20 years ago, almost 22 years exactly if I remember correctly. Considering what these vessils go through, maybe that's too long. It's a shame. The biggest irony is that this falls only 4 days after the 17th anniversary of the explosion of the Challenger. Who thought anything like that would ever happen again....especially so close to the anniversary? I sure didn't.

I remember laying in bed at Terrebonne General Hospital after having knee surgery and sort of waking up in time to watch the Challenger take off then explode. I remember watching David Letterman that night and he had a hard time doing his show. It was a somber day in America in which people will know where they were and what they were doing when the Challenger exploded.
This morning I woke up a little later than usual and I turn on the TV to watch a little bit of the local news and Dan Rather along with Russ Mitchell are talking about Columbia being missing then video is shown of the shuttle breaking up just a few minutes before landing. On this day people will remember the same as above.
May they rest in peace.

Randy dedicated "whos behind the door" to the people who were on the spaceshuttle last night at the acoustic show. Just letting everyone know who weren't present at that show.
that's cool. thank's for the info.

It is strange how these flights have become so routine and then something tragic happens and it makes you think...wow these people are in outer space...that is so risky and dangerous...I tip my hat to all of them and hope their families somehow find peace.

Even though we are a curious breed, I'm drawn to the spiritual side of this. In my opinion, whenever we get too close to seeing beyond our visions, we get knocked down a peg. I'm not a huge Christian or anything, but as I remember the term "Acts Of GOD", I kinda believe that whenever GOD doesn't want us to see something, he creates a diversion. Much like the Mars landing of the second probe. He's given us enough to explore here on Earth, but we want more. I'm sure this is just a fluke and probably will not be totally solved but, we will continue to explore, and we will continue to lose life.
My prayers for all the families and friends go out to those in need.
God Bless!

I guess if you could pick a time to die it would be fulfilling your dreams and destiny...
Fly on free birds your free at last.....God bless you all...
I'd just gotten into my usual chatroom on Saturday and was reading "pieces are all over Texas" and "I heard more than one boom", posts from others; I asked what was going on, and "Columbia disintegrated" was all I got. I raced to Yahoo! News after that...and got confirmation.
Words can't describe horror; There's still a lot of numbness from 9-11 going through, and it makes this latest tragedy hard to process. I managed to pen a poem (Rather long at that), but that was all. Sorting this out is hard...
I pray that the families and friends of the lost astronauts find some solace in spite of this. Patton's admonition of "We should not be sad that these people died; We should be proud that such people lived" waxes inadequate at present, but in time...we can do just what he calls us to do.
I say a prayer for all, but I beam with pride at my fellow Israeli, Ilan Ramon...the first Israeli in space. Every picture of him reflects the honor and pride in his heart that he has for such a noble call. Maybe someday I will get to make a pilgrimage to Israel and if they have a memorial for him by then, I will place a small stone there to honor him. I hope they plant a tree in his name on The Avenue Of The Righteous very soon...
"Who's Behind The Door?" was too fitting a dedication for Columbia's crew; The very essence of exploring the unknown is the heart of the song and space was indeed an unknown. There will never be as many answers as there are questions, but that should never deter us from the Journey; Set each foot forward deliberately and purposefully, and you will find your answers, for they won't come to you. Peace on your own Journey...
"They watch us all...they're only making sure that we don't trip and fall..."
