Here is a good article....

Satellite Radio: XM or Sirius?
Wed Nov 10, 5:33 PM ET

Patrick Norton - ExtremeTech

I've traveled thousands of miles with both XM and Sirius radio receivers wired into my truck, and I'm confident that they both work well all over the country. They both offer 60-plus channels of commercial-free music. And frankly, beyond the logos, the boxes you use to tune in XM and Sirius have quite a bit in common.

No matter which satellite provider I'm listening to, I'm continually amazed with just how cool it is to stick with a favorite music channel across three or four states' worth of bad highway. (Or the even simpler joy of having some rock music I like on the airwaves here in San Francisco.)

Satellite radio, XM or Sirius, is very cool. But is there an easy way to choose between the two?

Possibly.

Who's Got What

At $9.99 per month, XM radio is a tad cheaper than Sirius, which costs $12.95. XM also has the edge in hardware technology, with the first receiver that can pause and replay what you're listening to, Delphi's SkyFi 2, along with the first personal satellite radio receiver, Delphi's MyFi.

I've also found that the audio compression used for XM sounds a tad less squished than Sirius'. (Both systems require some serious compression to save on satellite bandwidth.) With the truck windows down at 60 mph, it's hard to tell the difference between the two, but in a quiet environment, Sirius reminds me of a slightly overcompressed MP3. Neither sounds as crisp as a track played from an audio CD. If you're an audiophile, you'll notice. (And over time, probably forget, if you really enjoy the content.)

But does $3 a month cheaper, marginally better audio quality and the ability to pause what you're listening (at least on one receiver) to make XM a slam dunk? Not really: Satellite radio is less about the hardware and monthly fee, or even the audio quality, than it is about finding the content you want.

As PC Mag editor and long-term Howard Stern fan Lance Ulanoff demonstrates in "Can Shock Jock Jolt Satellite Radio?", picking between XM and Sirius can be as simple as one entertainer. Ulanoff is ready to pick up a satellite radio … when Howard leaves FM radio and starts broadcasting on Sirius in 2006. And for some folks, that one "gotta have it" programming will be the trick to choosing between XM and Sirius satellite radio.

"Opus and Andy?" XM. Professional football? Sirius has the exclusive rights to broadcast the NFL. Baseball fan? XM just picked up the rights to Major League Baseball. National Public Radio, the National Basketball Association or the National Hockey League? They all have deals with Sirius. Gotta have NASCAR (news - web sites) radio? Then you're gonna go with XM.

Want both NPR and NASCAR? Then you might want to buy two receivers, one for XM and one for Sirius.

What About Music?

Unless you're a serious Elvis fan, music probably isn't the easiest way to pick between the two satellite systems. Sirius's Channel 13, Elvis Radio, runs the King 24/7, but both systems have more than 60 commercial-free channels dedicated to different genres of rock, hip-hop, country, classical, jazz and just about every other genre of music.

That said, don't just take the salesperson's word (or mine) that both systems offer a similar range of music content. Spend some time at XMradio.com or Sirius.com and take a look at exactly what both services deliver. Case in point? Sirius has four hip-hop channels (HipHop Nation; Wax, for DJ mixes and freestyle; BackSpin, which offers old-school rap; and Shade 45, an "uncensored" hip-hop channel created by Eminem (news - web sites) and Sirius), while XM offers RAW "Uncensored Hip Hop" and The Rhyme: "Hip Hop from Day One.<"p> Both XM and Sirius offer bluegrass and old-school country channels, along with separate channels for contemporary, classic and new country. Both XM and Sirius even offer classic '80s hair bands: On Sirius, it's channel 23, Hair Nation, while XM's channel 41, the Boneyard, mixes hair bands and stadium rock.

As far as I'm concerned, satellite radio isn't just for cross-country truck drivers who don't want to constantly juggle the dial in search of a good tune. Both XM and Sirius offer an amazing array of listening, including music, sports and even talk channels. Frankly, the hardest thing about satellite radio is choosing just one provider.

After all is said and done, I think I want Sirius's music programming over XM's delivery system. My wife wants Sirius for NPR. The guy I commute with wants XM, 'cause he's a baseball nut. The guys I race with from Colorado want XM for NASCAR, and well, another buddy from Seattle is going with Sirius to get the NFL games. And we all know PC Magazine's Ulanoff is going with Sirius for Stern. Maybe getting both isn't a bad idea.

Opus & Andy? ummm...ok. XM is the much better company by far. If you like having an air conditioner like unit in your car, then go with Sirus. XM is always coming out with new and better products. Just my two pennies.

I use XM Delphi Skyfi and am quite happy. NFL games would be nice but I'll be better off with baseball.

Here is link that compares the two by music:

Big XM user, here.
I love my XM, but I'll have to admit, I think I'm going to switch over to Sirius when my subscription is up.....OR I'm just going to get both.

Reason:
Sirius has the NFL.
Sirius has a "stadium rock" channel (The Buzzsaw) that plays bands like AC/DC, Aerosmith, Rush, Ozzy Osbourne, Scorpions, and Van Halen.........and they have a "hair band" channel (Hair Nation) that plays bands like Def Leppard, Poison, Bon Jovi, and Whitesnake.

XM has "The Boneyard" that mixes the two types.

So I like the NFL and I think Sirius has more stations that I will like. I'm not into baseball or Nascar.

I still love my XM though.

While I am not too sure what Young Raymond means by having an "air conditioning like unit" in your car, I too would probably switch to Sirius if Alpine offered it on their stereos instead of XM. I have XM and my friend has Sirius and the content is simply better. I can ALWAYS find familiar songs on Sirius.

The content being better is a matter of opinion.

I personally prefer XM's content and the cheaper prices.

Either way, it's nice we have the choice.

All I meant was that XM's units are much nicer and compact. Who listens to football on the radio anyway? It's on Sunday's, you watch it. Baseball is constantly on and I understand listening to it. Besides, have you checked Sirius's stock lately? It's dropping.

But Ray the stock will go back up once Howard gets on Sirius:rolleyes:

I live in Houston.
I play fantasy football.
I don't want to just watch my home team.
I may want to listen to Seattle vs. Chicago.

Sirius will give me that.
XM will not.

I'm not worried about the stock.
Sirius is coming on strong. XM fans like me are now looking to switch. Their stock will do just fine in the long run.

Satellite radio is the future.

Who would pay for radio...you might ask?
The same people who used to say "who would pay for tv?", or "who would pay for water?"

I'm jumpin on the bandwagon early.

All valid points. XM is alot more appealing to me. They are the bigger company and it'll only get bigger. Wait til you see what they do next! :)

It should be noted that XM is partially owned by Clear Channel:XM's powerful strategic and equity partners are leaders in their respective industries. These include General Motors, the largest U.S. auto and truck manufacturer; Honda Motors; Clear Channel, the largest U.S. radio station operator. XM - 2,000,000 subscribers
Sirius - 700,000 subscribers

They got a long way to go to catch up.

I personally would rather hear 165 baseball games than 17 football games.

Nascar??? Thats funny. They can have it....

I want music variety. I could give a flip about sports. I like my local games which I go to or watch on the tube and I like the World Series. How can one listen to NASCAR? A bunch of cars going around in circles, lol.

Anywho ... What would matter most to me is content, equipment quality, and reliability. I haven't found out yet if my system is already compatible. I think only the JBL Premium in the Solara is XM ready. What is the best system and does anyone think the set-up in the commercial that allows you to take the system with you and put it in a docking station is worth it? I listen to the music that is broadcast on cable TV through my surround sound system now or internet radio.

I really like my Delphi Skyfi. Its not the smallest one out but thats what I like. It has a big screen that is quite visible.

The Delphi Skyfi 2 just came out. It lets you pause music and can remember your favorite songs. Its more money but I expect the prices to drop in time.

I bought the car kit for my vehicle and the home kit.

Don't use the FM modulator. Have it wired directly into your car stereo. The reception will be much better. This goes for XM and Sirius.

I used to listen to music on my digital cable but the music isnt nearly as good as what is broadcast on XM.

Check out this link to compare the two formats.

Bingo.
I have the SkyFi too. I really like it. I have the dock for my car, the boom box, and the dock for my home stereo. Actually, I have hooked it up to my computer instead of my stereo and I record directly from the XM to my computer. That's the best part.

As far as the car, Dale is exactly correct. Get it wired directly to your car stereo. I use the FM modulator and the reception leaves alot to be desired, BUT, I have the ability to take it with me in any car I happen to be riding in. I am sacrificing quality for portability.

One more thing we failed to mention is that the Delphi Skyfi comes with a remote control.

We sound like salesman..... ;)

WOW!! This thread really took off! Of course the content of either is a matter of opinion. Musical taste is opinion. I didn't think I needed to make that disclaimer.....but I guess I do.

For whoever asked about the portable units, I don't know first hand how well they are. I have an Alpine XM tuner connected directly to an Alpine XM ready receiver. When connected, the radio adds two extra bands (XM1, XM2) So now you have AM, FM1, FM2, XM1, XM2. The signal for XM is crystal clear. I'm sure that if you connect your portable unit directly to the receiver, and not go through an FM modular, the portable unit will perform just as well as a dedicated unit.

This thread has been very informative and has given me insight into the whole satellite thing. My next vehicle (which will be purchased here shortly) will have XM and I'm going to take advice from this thread and have it connected directly into the receiver. Thanks guys! :)

Well, at least one can't argue my point.

Dale mentioned:
"XM - 2,000,000 subscribers
Sirius - 700,000 subscribers "

My response meant that the amount of subscribers doesn't indicate a better product. (Not that Dale meant that)

More people drive a Ford Taurus' than a Lexus.
More people shop at Walmart than Saks Fifth Avenue.
More people eat at Bennigan's than Melville's Restaurant.

:D

Correct.

My point of listing total subscribers was just to show the difference. Nothing more.

XM has been out longer so naturally I would expect them to have more.

I'm sure that both services are great.

One thing to note: Right now Circuit City's website is offering a special only availably throught the website (not in the store)....the home and car kits are now only $49.99 as opposed to the normal $69.99. When you add a $20 rebate from XM to it you are getting each for only $29.99. I'm ordering another car kit.

Sounds like a good idea for me, too. Then I can install one permanently in my car for the better reception and I can have one that I can move from car to car.

Thats exactly my point.

There are some really nice flexible arms sold on eBay that attach to a bolt on the rail of your seat and extend upwards for the XM unit to attach to. They arent much. I use that type mount for mine since my dash space is limited and dont want it on the windshield. Check it out...

There is a great article comparing the two, and the equipment as well, in the December issue of "Sound & Vision" magazine.
