I think with the vast amount of musical knowledge on the board, this would be a good place to ask for recommendations.

I like GARY HOEY, but I don't know his stuff well enough to buy his CD's. I have 1 of his tapes. It's pretty good.

Anyone have his stuff?
Anyone recommend it?
If so....which one?

Next.

David Chastain.
I have 2 CD's.
One I love. (Sick Society)
The other is just ok. (Movements Through Time)

Should I get his other stuff?

Yeah? What about 'em?

Can you give me more details?
Actually, I know them, but what I'm looking for here is more elaboration as to "why" one should buy them.

Kinda like..."If you like Zakk Wylde, then this is a must get....Same style, but more hard-core than with Ozzy...faster, harder songs...killer singer, too."

Anyway...you get the drift.

I (we) need to get an idea of what the band is like.
Just because someone likes them, doesn't mean others will.

Thanks.

Black Label Society is a good band, I highly recommend them to you too...cross between Black Sabbath, Ozzy, and some of the more heavier 80's metal/thrash...Zakk Wylde is one of the best guitar players to come out, along with Dimebag Darrell and John Petrucci in the last 15 years...

You also need to purchase the last 3 Dream Theater CD's (SFAM, 6DOIT, and TOT) because those are 5 of the greatest musicians you will ever hear!

NICE!

Thanks. I've always liked Dream Theatre but I only have 2 of their tapes. Haven't paid too much attention to them lately, but I know that I could like them.

I've heard ALOT about their newer stuff being pretty good.
I think I'll give them a shot.

And you most certainly should DN because now that Jordan Rudess is playing keys for DT, they have become a much better band...the 1999 Scenes from a Memory CD is a concept record, the 2001 Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is a 2 disc set and disc 2 is a 75 MIN song broken up into 8 parts...its very listenable and enjoyable. The Train of Thought CD from 2003 is another solid offering as well...since you play guitar, I think you of all people will appreciate the playing of John Petrucci...Highly Recommended CD's for you to check out time and money permitting..........

The BLS is good.Zakk gets to show off some of his influences, such as Southern Rock, mixed in with what he has learned from Ozzy. What I like is when Zakk himself sings. Man that give give you the creeps sometimes right there.................

Sweet!
I didn't know that was Zakk singing.
Does he sing on all the songs?...or does he have a regular singer and he just sings on 1?

Thanks!

I'm not entirely sure if he sings all his songs. I know OZZY has guested a good bit. If you saw "Rockstar" and heard him speak....welll. ypu can only imagine his singing voice.

DN, if you are into thrash metal such as Pantera, Testament, and others, definitely check out Lamb of God. Their 2000 debut "New American Gospel" is a decent record though I am not thrilled about the vocals on that CD. However, their 2003 release "As the Palaces Burn" is a good CD with better production and better vocals (reminds me of the Testament 'Low' CD) They have a new record coming out Tuesday 8/31 called "Ashes of the Wake" and are now signed to Sony Music.

Iwanna know if anybody bought Velvet Revolver. Is it woth buying, I heard Slither and it rocks but I'm not gonna buy the album for 1 song. As far as good albums I've bought, Audioslave, Iced Earth, Queens of the Stone Age, The new Disturbed cd and the new Godsmack CD.

Yes...love Pantera and Testament.
I think I've heard Lamb of God, but I remember not liking the vocals....if I remember correctly.
I'll give them another shot just to make sure.

If you can, download these songs from the "As the Palaces Burn" CD. (Ruin, As the Palaces Burn, 11th Hour)

Iced Earth is a great band and I like Godsmack as well even though they always get ragged on for sounding like Alice in Chains...

Personally, I am not a huge GNR/STP fan so Velvet Revolver sounds decent from the songs I heard, but I am not inspired to run out and buy the CD. However, a bunch of people on this msg board bought the CD and claim they like it...

This is the kind of thread I always end up discovering new music from.... it's the best thing about the "long tail" and music.... before u had to read in a magazine or hunt around in a record store to find something cool -- which made the choices always subject to the "gatekeeping" of editors and music store buyers and etc... -- which would lead inevitably to mediocrity and the prevalence of "poser music" -- i.e. stuff that you want to like because you think it's cool, not because you really like it. Music journalism especially creates high-profiles for really lame stuff, because journalists are always looking behind their backs, trying to profile something that they think in 2 years people will think they were cool for liking "way back when".... I GREATLY prefer the democratic nature of threads like these, where people simply list their tastes and you can just look something up on itunes or youtube and check it out for yourself....

These days I'm really into techno and techno/rock and stuff like that -- try searching for these songs:

Thomas Falke "Revolution On The Dance Floor"
Groove Cutter "My Shooter"
Control One "Just A Little Bit"
Ian Carey "Redlight"
Kevin Weg "Dead Radio"

I don't usually go for techno but these are sort of like a weird crossover between rock and techno/trance.

Here are also some downloads with some other cool stuff too -- http://www.electricfilebox.com/tracks
