View Full Version : Why the Bible bashing?

Hi there,

I'm new here and I just wanted to say I like the site. It's great.
I just got Zebra's latest album and I have a question.....

On the song "Why", it seems like Randy's doing a lot of Bible bashing. Is there any reason why he's doing that? Or am I just reading more into the song than I should??

Welcome! Welcome!

Glad you're here.

My take on the lyrics of the somg is the age old question of our existance... and keeping a clean life as to go to heaven.

However, Lyrics can be taken in so many different ways.

If you read the footnotes on the Black and White CD Jacket, randy touches on his views and things he has written about and why.... One of the pragraphs touches on this subject.

Welcome, by the way!

Welcome to the board.....my name is Doorman and I'm the "rush chairman".
Everyone can get a different "message" from a song....many of Randy's songs deal with life, death, afterlife etc..."Who Am I" deals with this subject as well..."the goods not counted in a faithless man". The subject is one we all wonder at times, what does happen to us when we pass away? Will being more or less devoted to ones faith alter our "after life destiny"? Is it something even worth worrying about? Some of these points may or may not reflect Randy's own personal views on the subject. It's all for the individual!
Again....welcome.

Just playing around...:D Randy would wear all black on stage if there was any indication he was. Plus, the Zebra lyrics would be very different....

My opinion, "Why" is a song that is about a view, through an adolescent's eyes. Again, it can be looked upon as "biblical bashing", but it doesn't condem God or anything, more of wanting to know about life in general.

Songs are just views or emotions. "Who Am I" is a song I feel strongly about because it brings religion into a new light, when science is able to prove such events have happened, why wasn't it not listed in the bible when God knew we were a curious breed. We had this debate awhile back and peoples views got over heard and taken out of context. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Some have a stronger view then others. This is caused by the church. Point I make, my wife is Catholic, I am Lutheran. My folks raised me that way because of a choice of location. Perhaps the nearest Catholic church was too far away to travel I don't know. But my opinion is we believe in one God, regardless of religion, just that the Catholic church will not allow me to come to communion, but a Catholic is welcomed in a Lutheran church. To me, the church has turned into McDonalds and Burger King. They each sell burgers, but one flame broils and the other one fry's. And with all the controversy in Priests being prosecuted for sexual assault cases of the past, we are all created equal, regardless of religion. The Church offers much headaches to the world. One argument which makes sense to me is if you are married and your marriage is at shambles, they want you to speak to your priest. Most priests have never been in a relationship, how can they honestly direct you down the correct path? Much like fixing a car with plumbers tools. I would rather a priest who has been married, who has children and grandchildren, and can see your life from every angle, instead of what is the church's way. Look at all the cases of women getting killed by their spouses, in some of these cases, I'm sure their priests told them to stick together, things will work out. Tell that to her now. Unless the ultimate prize was to go heaven, I don't think she was going to marriage counsel to find that out.

Just a long winded opinion, don't get offended.

I really believe "Why" is just a song that is asking questions. I never seen anything in any of his songs as Bible bashing personally.

Ylee, you are a man of wise words, you know that?

My take, since you started a mass debate...

I was raised catholic based on my mom's choice. My father is against organized religion completely,

I respect and honor my catholic faith, however, as a woman, the "shame" factor placed on me caused me to a very late bloomer as far as being a woman. I resent that. However, on the flip side, is probably partly responsible for the creative and eccentric individual I am, today.

If we look at one of the newer Zebra posters, I noticed Randy chose artwork simbolizing several faiths. The main faiths in our world.

I do not know exactly what he is getting at with his songs that question.... life....

but I like to look at it as Christ is the Savior of the Western World, and Budda the East.... Buddism and Christianity are based on parallel structures. I do Believe Jesus is the Son of God, as I know he has not forgotten about me.

The Miracle of Life is that humanity evolves against the force of entropy... which is a phenomenon. And the female human egg, ovum, is identical in structure and makeup of the very first living cell. wow

Science and religion to meet in the middle, alot. However, minds wonder why are we alone.....

Happy are those who do not see, but still believe... comes into play.

hmmm I still wonder. Maybe that is what Randy means.

As far as the Bible goes.... The one we know of was printed when the Church had governmental control of Western Society. The CHurch had the responsibility of governing and maintianing control over the masses. Do I think they tweaked it? I don't know.

But would life be worth living without challenges? No. Heaven would be no fun.

However, we wonder because we feel we have nothing tangible. answers....

I would like to write a song to Randy.

That if you simply look into the unconditional love around us in this world.... like city lights shining out amongst dark pockets....

that Love is not science. Love is not a choice.
Love is both poisen and sweet

Love is what we look for

It's always there

whether you ask or you don't
Love is our miracle, and why we live

hmmm.... gonna go grab my geetar.

Sorry guys... I know... I am strange

You're just reading too much into the lyrics. Randy is not a satanist, or the devil, or anything anti-"God". His lyrics have always been very introspective, and unfortunately, some of the lyrics unintentionally rub people the wrong way. But again, that is what makes us human beings....we're all different.

I am not going to piss anyone off by telling my thoughts on religion. I will say that "Why?" is an incredible song that asks valid questions which NOBODY knows the answers too.

One of my favorite songs on Z-IV.

I am no Bible Thumper... but check this out.

Jesus' friends were a congregation of Prostitutes, Theives, Tax Collectors. SOme were straigt up. However most were not.

The biggest irony, is Jesus was a Middle easterner.

There is one to swallow. Jesus was called a blasphemist. And he never put rules on how we worship, or why. So when people stray from the the structure of the church... they are chastized and called satanist, etc.

good point Ryank.

The problem with this country is your either FOR or AGAINST something, and you are labeled depending on your choice. There is no middle anymore.

No. Because that is what we are taught to beleive.

My husband taught me to not let the facts effect my attitude.

So, therefore i do not.

Ylee, you should be in charge of a political group. Youwould be a good public speaker!:)

No thanks, I try and stay away from politics as much as I can. I look at it this way, with all the choices weve had for over 200 years, why is this country still going down the sh!t tube. They all promise, but never get there because no one wants you to succeed. Much like the Democrats fighting the Pres about the war. My predictions, they'll have Osama by September. We probably know exactly where he is and exactly where his poop holes are too!

Bungle, I'm trying to recall which song it's from.
Is that from "Nurse Rosetta" on the FROM THE INSIDE
album, or what?

A dedicated Alice fan from way back, I am - 1st seeing him
in 1975 on the "Welcome to My Nightmare" tour at City Park

I believe everything the Catholic Church teaches, but unfortunately there's a few bad eggs in it. Although I believe, practicing it isn't easy. Thank God for confession. the church is made up of humans and we're all sinners. Nothing wrong with the church just the people in it. Some are sicker than others.
