Well Dave, unfortunatley, I was brought up Catholic, went to Catholic School and my career has landed me a job in a Presbyterian church. At least in the Presbyterian church it's not "mandatory" to give up somethingduring Lent. I like and respect the idea more because it's a choice. I, at some point will probably change to a Protestant religion which I have been contemplating doing since I was 18. I actually got re-married in a Protestant Church.
Anyway, I have always thought from when I was a child it was a stupid rule. I don't think you have to give up something just at Lent to recipricate and acknowledge the sacrafice. I try and make sacrafices in some way all year long.
I certainly don't begrudge those who still choose to follow the man made rule, I just don't see the point. I'm just alot more liberal in my views and way of thinking as I've grown older especially concerning the Catholic church.
And you are right two each his own - neither is wrong - it's what suits your personal situation. Although I don't agree with you that we necessarily believe in 2 different things.

...and I'm not even Catholic....:D
I am a protestant (Lutheran) and we don't give up things for Lent.
Most of my friends are staunch Catholics and they always give up something...usually beer. (angry face)
I used to give up having sex with albino homosexual monkeys.....but this year I actually decided to take it serious.
I gave up fast food...I figure it's for a good reason and it can only be good for me...I need to eat healthier anyway.

What do you do in a Presbyterian church - occupational that is?
I agree that it is man-made. And I believe that as a Christian I should be living the Christian life every day, every second. And yeah, it is "seems" like "why sacrifice for only 40 days instead 80 days or instead of every day?" But to me this type of sacrifice is more like sacrificing something that you like, not sacrificing being a Christian. And this sacrifice is showing that you are taking EXTRA time to acknowledge the ultimate sacrifice for mankind.
We get together with family to celebrate the resurrection of Christ on Easter. But we don't do it every weekend. Just like people don't give up something every day, they do it for 40 days.
I don't follow the man made tradition of giving up something for lent anymore. But I don't think it is "stupid" either.
I agree: "And you are right two each his own - neither is wrong - it's what suits your personal situation. Although I don't agree with you that we necessarily believe in 2 different things"
What I think is stupid is when Christians of different denominations get nit picky and argue with who is right and who is wrong instead of concentrating on what really matter, and that is that Christ died for us.
