Critics Attack FCC's OK of Prime-time F-words

Warn commission's decision on Bono incident means vulgarity allowed on TV, radio anytime

WorldNetDaily, November 20, 2003

The Federal Communications Commission's ruling that U2 singer Bono did not violate decency rules when he uttered the F-word on a television program marks a dangerous sea change in the industry, warns a family advocacy group that has launched a campaign.

In a ruling last month, the commission effectively approved the word's use at any hour, except in sexual situations.

As WorldNetDaily reported, the FCC ruling was a response to a challenge by the Parents Television Council and more than 200 people who accused dozens of stations of violating federal restrictions when the singer said during the Golden Globe Awards in January, "this is really, really, f------ brilliant."

The FCC said while the word may be crude and offensive, in the context in which Bono spoke, he "did not describe sexual or excretory organs or activities."

"The Federal Communications Commission has approved the use of the 'F' word for use on any TV show or radio program, anytime day or night," theAmerican Family Association declared in a campaignto urge citizens to contact lawmakers.

"That means that real soon you will be watching a sitcom on TV, or news, or any drama or movie ? any program ? and it is ok! Hollywood is rejoicing!"

Songs on the radio will contain the word, and "shock jocks such as Howard Stern are now free to use any language, no matter how vile and repugnant, on their radio shows," the group said. "And use it they will."

In last month's ruling, the FCC's enforcement bureau chief, David Solomon, explained Bono used the vulgarity as an adjective or to emphasize an exclamation and that "the use of specific words, including expletives or other 'four-letter words' does not render material obscene."

"We have previously found that fleeting and isolated remarks of this nature do not warrant commission action," Solomon said.

The Los Angeles-based Parents Television Council said it plans to appeal.

"It's not shocking to us on the FCC decision because they're a toothless lion," said Lara Mahaney, director of corporate and entertainment affairs for the council. "They don't take indecency seriously and that's why you see it proliferating on the broadcast airwaves."

The American Family Association suggests citizens including the following text in a message urging lawmakers to take action against the FCC ruling: "The FCC has the responsibility of enforcing what constitutes decency on our nation's airwaves. Why have they failed the American people in this responsibility? To whom is the FCC accountable?"

This is one thing I have to disagree on. And you know that I love Bono. But I think they really should keep the F word off of regular TV for the children's sake. I met Bono on that night he was at the Grammys when he said that. Me and a few fans were staying in the city that whole week and a friend of mine worked for the Grammys at that time. Anyway, it doesn't sit well with me . I don't think that Bono would have even thought they would use him as an example for using the F word. Out of curiosity I would like to know what he thinks of this. It might be a big OOPS, what did I do now? LOL Anyway, this was my opinion. I wonder what everyone else thinks, any feedback? Opinions?

I do agree Chara on regular TV its just not a good thing. It is hard enough as it is to try and make sure my son doesn't see or hear inappropriate stuff on cable etc. But I can not be around 24 hours a day. What next Elmo telling Oscar the Grouch to go F*ck off?!?!? And believe me I am no prude but c'mon when will the line be drawn? There is a time and place for everything right? Again just my opinion folks... :D

I still get all tingly when I hear them say "*****" on tv

Seriously, I miss the old tv days when we were entertained by variety shows and those great old sitcoms...there! I said it! I like old fashioned stuff.

I would really miss Law and Order SVU though...

I remember watching the Monkees and they couldn't say "Hell" on TV , now that to me is funny.

Definitely a no-no as far as I am concerned. It will start with this word and then grow into anything goes. Our kids and teens see too much violence on tv already and this will just add to that in my humble opinion. Not only that but talking/acting with these words will soon become the norm and once again down goes societal norms!

As far as I'm concerned TV has gone too far already. All your shows are sex driven these days. What happened to innuendo? I'm getting sick of it on the radio too, just shut up and play the tunes.

I second that John. Ever wonder why our society is the way it is? I have no doubt that it is due in part to the trash on tv, the violent video games, and total lack of morals.

Amen to you who have families and screen what your children watch, get to know who your children hang with, and take time to spend time with your children:)

You can see that right now in Greece on their TV. After 9:30 at night, they show pornos on regular TV.
