(1) RANDY RHOADS (2) STEVE VAI (3) EDDIE VAN HALEN (4) YNGWIE MALMSTEEN. Ill start off with randy rhoads. Randy came on strong with powerfull leads that were very tastfull and well thought out, blew alot of people away. EDDIE VAN HALEN basically hendrix on steroids great sound very tricky player the king of the hammer. (YNGWI MALMSTEEN) hard rocking very very fast and classical guitar player. (STEVE VAI) my number one choice.this guy can play it all heavy / jazz / blues / you name it he also has some of the best sounds and is always experiencing with his many different guitar effects . Great player very clean and tastfull .

There are truly too many to list....and hard to say who is the best because they all have there own style. But Steve Vai is unbelievable! One who i like alot but i know won't get the credit and that's fine..but i've heard alot of differen't stuff by him is Phil Collen...he can blaze with the best of them.

zak wylde - i have some footage of himplaying with ozzy in 92, and it's amazing. He had the look, the sound, the energy!, played behind his back. these days he's a little too dark for me, but he's one pick. I'll stick with the living, but i would pick randy rhoads. I'll pick lifeson because he's had so many different and classic sounds; a unique player. haven't heard malmsteen in a while. i'll pick steve vai. I'm drawing a blank.... i won't pick page, cuz i saw a reunion a while back and he *****ed up stairway; i just don't think he's in his prime. oh yeah, i may regret it, but i like paul gilbert (racer x, mr. big) so here's my list > zakk wylde, alex lifeson, steve vai, paul gilbert

Seriously...
Randy Jackson has to be one of the best rock guitarists out there! From style to tone you cant touch trhe guy!
Have you ever tried to play Kashmir and sing it at the same time?
I'd like to see Eddie or Yngy do that!
Randy also comes up with the most amazing tunnings and voiceings! He blows me away everytime I have seen him!
And that goes back to when I was 17 Years old!

Tom Scholz= the sound the inventions and one heck of a writer and player to.
Eddie Van Halen= what can I say
Andy Scott= the sweet gutarist really was heavey metal before the was such a thing..
Roy Clark= eys roy clark the man can play anything with a string and ws doing string pluckeing long before the young van halen was even born... too bad all he's remembered for is hee haw had to pay the bills.
Steve howe= his fingers are so long no wonder he's so good.
Rik emmit classical, heavey metal he can do it all , bluse you name it... Nad so well with feeling
David Gilmour= it's the sound no body plays with more feeling.
Randy jackson= what an acoustic player.
Neal Schon adn Steve lukather= two of the same guitarists both their bands went pop while all they wanted to do was wail. and wail they could,
Brian May= not the fastest but an inventor of sound.

HOW ABOUT LES PAUL !!!

ryank
07-12-2002, 02:53 PM
yes, roy clark can deliver! I left jackson out just to make it interesting. one small complaint - in the early days, it seems he would stick to one phrase/combination of notes and just play it as fast as he could. - not on the recordings, but live, but hell, i can't see how he can do some of the stuff while singing. It's easier for the artist while singing, but the end of slow down where he starts that lick on the high notes - d, c#,b, g, g# b, and then he starts "gimmie one time, two, three, four, rhumba, etc. That's tough to do; and kashmir, woah. if you listen without seeing or knowing them , you would swear that there is a seperate singer. I'm not sure if i got the king biscuit CD, but it's live recordings with "matching mole" and "ozzy" song at the end, with a few interuptions of someone talking on the board. I'll include a pic o the CD.

I'm just gonna ramble off some guitarists: Neal Schon (Journey), Eric Clapton, Tommy Shaw (Styx/Damn Yankees), Ted Nugent, Brad Gills (Night Ranger/Ozzy Osborne), Eddie Van Halen, Sammy Hagar, Pete Townsend, Randy Jackson, Steve Howe (Yes/GTR/Asia), Angus Young, Slash (G&R), Mike Campbell (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers), Joe Walsh, Jerry Cantrell (Alice and Chains), Howard Leese (Heart), Kirk Hammett (Metallatica) and I'm sure some have been repeated but I'm sure there are some that nobody has thought of.

No doubt, the best is Roy Clark - and this is coming from a country music hater! Will never get the notice he deserves.
Alex Lifeson - just try to play Freewill, you might hit it right once in a lifetime. Then try Between The Wheels, La Villa Strangita, etc. Still making his mark as one of the best guiter players.
Randy Jackson - carries the goods, espesially acoustically. Simply amazing live.
Ronnie Montrose - and you think any of the above listed is underrated! Mr. Versatile.
Jimmy Page - brilliant in his prime, which will have a lasting effect on generations to come.
Consolation Prize:
Eddie Van Halen - see JP.
Rik Emmett - maybe I am just biased towards RJ!
Stevie Ray Vaughn - he was so smoooooth...

1. As Eric Clapton once said about Mr. Jeff Beck "When Jeff's on, nobody can touch him!" Luckily he's "on" most of the time because he was one of the few guitarists of the 60's and 70's not to get into cocaine/heroine addiction. He's always name checked by guys like EC, Jimmy Page, Joe Perry, Steve Luthaker, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai - just to list a few. His use of feedback and fuzztone with the Yardbirds may have even influenced Hendrix since they recorded earlier than the Experience. He also pioneered the "talk box" that Peter Frampton and Joe Walsh later popularized. He gave up playing with a pick back in the 70's and his finger style playing, volume swells and bends are unique. You should pick up his recent "Live at Ronnie Scott's" on CD or DVD if you want your jaw to drop. Hopefully he'll be inducted into the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist this year - he's on the shortlist of nominees.

For my others, I'll go with some guys who haven't been mentioned, because I like EVH, SRV, Brian May as well.

2. Peter Green - The original lead singer and lead guitarist of Fleetwood Mac. He replaced Clapton in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and then stole that rhythm section (he had to name the band after them to make them leave) and set up an early British blues rock powerhouse. He wrote "Black Magic Woman" and Santana did not change A NOTE in Peter's solo. He also wrote "The Green Manalishi" (covered by Judas Priest a few years later) and "Oh Well" which used lashing instrumental sections with breaks for vocals that Led Zeppelin would nick a bit later for "Black Dog". B.B. King said that Peter Green was the only white blues player that was so good that he scared him!

3. Tom Verlaine - He and Richard Lloyd formed the nucleus of a "punk Grateful Dead" band called Television that spearheaded the NYC CBGBs scene. They played with a molten fury, but were not afraid to stretch out their dueling solos like the Dead and Quicksilver Messenger Service used to do in their hippie heyday. After Television broke up, Verlaine released solo albums that smoldered with a restrained power, my favorite was one called "Flashlight" - there were some solos on it that made the hairs on my neck stand up.

4. Steve Hackett - He was the lead guitarist of the 70's incarnations of Genesis. He provided lovely finger-style picking when needed and then fierce explosions of sound to cover the gamut of their progressive style. On albums like "Selling England by the Pound" you can hear Hackett doing the pull offs and hammer ons that EVH later popularized with "Eruption" to the rest of the world. Anything from "Foxtrot" to "Wind and Wuthering" are excellent showcases of his diverse skills.

I'd could also go on about guys like Joe Walsh, Johnny Winter, Rik Emmett, Mike Campbell and so many others. It's really hard to pick a top 4!

All of these guys mentioned are great, super great.
I used to have friendly arguments on who was the best yada, yada, yada.
All of these guys were influenced by someone most of us named, one by the other. Man Les Paul himself was incredible. I like to kind of look at the song writing abilities of these guitarist and how they use their playing into song, to me thats what makes a great musician. It may be simple to copy but very unique in their song. Example "Immigrant song" simple work but grabs your attention.
Yngwie, great technical but "what have you done for me" in song.

Heck I have seen so many in small clubs that are superb, and will never get the attention they deserve.

They are all great and here for us to enjoy.
Its still fun to argue a little though.
In my old age here, I have learned to appreciate just about any musician that gets up on any stage and can perform sufficiently at his instrument.
I know I have been TRYING to play guitar for 30 years, I wish I could do what some of these 15 year olds are doing. More than three chords though LMAO.

The ONLY three musicians I have ever seen that I think really stink it up are
this cat Randy Jackson, this lil dude Felix Haneman, and this terrible so called "drummer" Guy something. Terrible just plain terrible musicians.
I know this for SURE because I have seen them at least 100 times and always STINK!!!
