View Full Version : China Rain or the Sign?

OK, let's sort out the glam rockers from the prog rockers among the Zebra fans! I'm going to go with the Sign, on the basis that I like the intent better and that "I'm Alive" is an incredible enought song to be equal to many other entire albums.

Banterman,

I am also going with The Sign, but I am biased in the fact that I am also a fan of Mark Mangold and Terry Brock. Oh well, one more vote for The Sign.

I am surprised at you guy's. Unless my copy of the sign was overly compressed & prodouced. I'm going with China Rain a great Rock album. Only I can't vote every time I vote a messedge pops up invalid function.

Let me give the China Rain CD another listen. Yes, RnR TNT, the Frontiers version of "Signs of Life" was compressed (Randy was very disappointed by that)...but I knew about that particular project from the very beginning and was very much looking forward to its release. So, once again, I do think I am using an unfair bias in my vote.

I don't think China Rain was that great. To me it was very "Hair Bandish". Don't get me wrong Randy was GREAT in it but the songs were hair bandish to me. I like a one song on that CD, "Your'e Only Lonely Today" which is my fav' off the album. I think this stuff sounded just like Poison and Motley Crue material. And I HATE those band's! I haven't heard The Sign yet, so I'm not gonna vote. But when I hear it you could probablly count on me to vote The Sign, cause I don't like hair bands!

The Signs key board player is obsessed with Joe ****ers woodstock version of " with a little help from my friends" every chance he gets on the sign he sneaks riffs from the intro and randy hardly sings on it, and there are too many dead beat songs on it.

The keyboard playing on "I'm Alive" is great. As for Randy singing, he might not sing much but he plays some great guitar on The Sign's album.

You will like The Signe if you like Kansas, Joe ****er, Rush, Yes, Sammy hagar, and you #@$!%#@

You will like China Rain if you Like Randy Jackson, Zebra, Zepplin, Malmsteen , deep purple, Jonny Thunders, the monkeys

And to all those Hair Band comments. Remember those "hair band " posers were imitating the few good what ever they are and gave them a bad name.

Your alright Banterman but I still think the Sign ****s

I think it's more like you'll dig China Rain if you dig Motley Crue, Poison, Def Leppard. I really only like "You're Only Lonely Today" and "Light of My Love" on that album because those songs are much more of the Zeppelin influence. Still not sure which LOML I like better.

I actually think that in many ways Zebra is more like the Sign than China Rain. Zebra has a lot of those prog rock influences like Yes and Rush and Kansas.

I dig all the bands you mentioned except for Yngvie because he #@$!%#@ major %#&* and Jonny Thunders because I have no idea who he is.

Now don't go forcing me to write my opinion of the song "Last Forever" ok?!

I like both albums but I like CR better for 2 reasons. 1 I'm an 80's metalhead and love that stuff. 2 Randy has an awesome voice and hardly sings on the Sign. Also I hated most of the hair bands from the 80's and CR doesn't sound like them. That album just came out too late, Grunge was taking over by then. As a Kansas fan, I love The Sign but I think they missed out by not using Randy on vocals more. That's my 2 cents.:p

"I'm Alive" by the sign is better than any of those. Actually, the 2 CR songs I like are "You're Only Lonely Today" and "LOML" which of course is also a Zebra song. Never could see the appeal of "Last Forever."

What's the deal with this:This CD contains the "U.S. Masters" and is available only on this Website. It contains All "Bonus Tracks" omitted from other territory's versions, contains mixes not previously released and it is specially mastered by the band with superior sound.http://indigorecords.com/sign.html

I have the Japanese version with one bonus track (I never bought the domestic release), but this sounds like something different.

I cant believe this was even a vote that was close. The Sign is Awful. China rain was Fun. the Sign sounds likes Kansas and i couldnt stand that band. They were God awful.
and how is the sign NOT A HAIR BAND EITHER?

Banterman picked on Last Forever, Forever again is BRUTAL to listen to...BRUTAL
I listened to this cd once and swore id never torture my self with this crap again....I saw this poll...There is no choice here,,,the Sign Is ****ing awful and Girlie hairband lying progreesive, it aint progressive, its awful. Its So Anti Zebra i will never listen to this piece of shit again.

THIS IS HORRID. this is the exact reason Zebra was shunned...1/2 this shit shoulda been in flashdance

I cant believe Randy participated in this....Is the Worst Cd of all time...by farrrrrrr

My God it gets worse every song....Its god Awful...theres not a song i can EVEN LIKE on the sign...

It will no doubt go down as the worst crap ive ever heard, China rain was at least fun, and Banterman? Id put Last Forever against any song on this crappy sign...you seem to be hooked into Bands like Kansas and Journey who were God Awful for Music. Was there any wonder Grunge wanted that shit out?

Hey Rocker,

why are you holding back so much? why don't you tell us how you REALLY feel?

I actually only like "I'm Alive" on that album, but I like it so much that I think it tops China Rain. I don't like CR much either other than "Only Lonely Today." Then again I also like Kansas, and I hate stuff like Poison that many Zebra fans seems to go for.

Anyway, Zebra was not shunned because of The Sign. Their initial popularity waned way before that.

Thats what i meant. Zebra wasnt Shunned because of the Sign, they were shunned because they got GROUPED in with this crap.
I stand by what i said. LAST FOREVER is a great song, hairband, zebra song or RJ solo. Bang On the Wall is Fun, so is Sex reaction and Light and Bed...i like every song on this cd except one and that is for the same reason i dont like the sign.

10-24-2004, 08:11 PM
I think Zebra's problem was more that they got grouped in with 80s hair metal bands even though their music was not like that at all. I think Zebra's music is much more like Led Zep/Rush/Yes but because it was the 80s and because the albums had that production style they got lumped in with bands like Poison which they were nothing like in reality.

I guess there's more than 1 angle you can come into Zebra from. Some come in from the 80s metal angle, some more from the prog rock angle.

I hate when people start grouping bands by hair band or not. Check out Rush in the mid 80's and even they put their hair up. Look at Ozzy as well. ***** the term hair band. and i don't know where you people come off calling China Rain hair band music. Can we just call good music, music. i listen to the music first and foremost, and am not concerned by what the band looks like. I happen to like some poison as well as Motley crue. I don't believe you can group Tesla and Whitesnake in with hair bands either. Whitesnake was around in the 70's. My point is , that everybody at some point or another teased their hair in the 80's. SO WHAT!!!. Just listen to music and like it or not.
And given the crap that's coming out now in the music world, i'd take some hair band music anyway.

In the 80's every record company who had an artist who had guitars in their band, tried to get them to tease their hair.

Then perhaps a lack of hairspray in the 80s CAN be a sign of a band's integrity?!? Notice that as bad as Jimmy Page's 80s projects were, you didn't see him teasing his hair!

I suggest bands stick with leave-in conditioner and leave the hairspray behind ;-)

RUSHFAN

If Jimmy Page teased his hair i'd shave mine. your probably right about the integrity comment, but i still stand by my comment that i don't care what they look like, just the music. Poison, motley Crue, cinderella, Ratt and the like put out some good music despite the hair, in my humble opinion.
