ZF, he is good, I'll give him that. I find that he overplays way too much. Phil Collins in my book is a great drummer. So is the guy from the Dave Mathews Band. Portnoy just overplayed the Rush tune on the tribute album. He has a knack of trying to change the time signatures up and make something like an 8 beat hi hat, and squeeze it to 16, just to add that extra flare. Like I said, a great technical drummer. He is like a Stewart Copeland of the new millenium. Stewart played with a more jazz infusion than rock. Same for Steve Smith. Portnoy to me justs seems to stretch the boundary as if to say, now top that.

I CALL IT "LEAD DRUMS" CARL PALMER DID IT IN THE 70'S
BUT THE OFFBEAT WACKY TIME CHANGE STUFF IS VERY HARD TO PLAY!!!
PORTNOY IS BETTER THAN ALL YOU MENTIONED IN MY OPINION!!!
I REALLY LIKE DAVE MATTHEW'S DRUMMER!!!

I went to school for a while at Berklee, Portnoy was a student there at the time. He is an awesome technician, may have the best chops in the world but some other cats (Berklee Jazz term)were in and out of there that I would rather see and hear play. Terry Bozzio, Rod Morgenstein (he is an instructor there now), Dave Weckl (technically in the same league as Portnoy). One of the instructors was a guy named Tommy Campbell. He had played with Weather Report and Sting. When he practiced, the halls in the percussion dept. would fill up with people sitting outside his room to listen. He was the s**t at Berklee at that time. His 4-way independence is unmatched!
I am more impressed by subtle complexities than outright technical speed and power. Peart is great, Guy is great, Portnoy is great, but for my money the best ever was Bonzo.
Just my rambling opinions.

ZF, I got an old Buddy Rich tape that has Peart, Omar Hakim, and Wil Calhoun. I've always like Hakim, especially on Stings dream of the blue turtles album. Thats why Peart went and re-invented himself, to get that swing. Carter Buford from Dave Mathews Band played on a Vertical Horizons album. Don't know which tunes. Calhoun played for Living Colour (Cult Of Personality), he actually surprised me as a very technical drummer. The list can go on and on with these great drummers. Their use to be a website, many moons ago, and you would vote who you thought was the best drummer out there. If the person wasn't listed, you were able to add them. Of course, I added Guy, and he actually got in the top ten, with a little help from me, of course. You were able to vote 5 times per day. They changed it out with guitarists, bass players, keyboardest, you get the picture. It was a fun site, just to help spark up some interests.

Omar Hakim is incredible, as is Vinnie Colaiuta with Sting. I used to also watch Will Calhoun play at Berklee, he was one of the more well known students of the day.

ZF, you never heard of Living Colour? You need to download Cult Of Personalilty. Calhoun is a very good drummer, with excellent timing. Omar Hakim played on Stings first solo album, dream of the blue turtles.

I HAVE TO AGREE WITH YLEE ON PORTNOY, I THINK I SAID THIS EARLIER, HE JUST TRIES TO DO TO MUCH!!!!!!!! GREAT NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PORTNOY AND PEART IN MY OPINION IS PEART SEEMS TO KNOW EXACTLY WHEN TO GET "FANCY" PORTNOY ON THE OTHER HAND JUST KEEPS SHOVING IT AT YOU, LOVE TO LISTEN AND WATCH, (VIDEO)HIM.
I THINK GUY CAN DO JUST ABOUT ANYTHING. HOWEVER,
BONZO TO ME WAS THE GREATEST, WHAT ABOUT MITCH MITCHELL (HENDRIX) AND COBHAM???
I agree with Danny Portnoy is a great drummer but Peart,Bonhom and Gelso have more feel when they play..
