I was in Blockbuster a couple of weeks ago checking out some DVD's and overheard the chat between the clerks. One of them was asking the other which boy band was better; In Synch or The Beatles?!!!?!!!? I nearly lost it! I had to step in. This is what I said.

"You can't compare a band who has all of their music, words and dance moves all thought out for them to a band that wrote it's own music and lyrics. See if you know who In Synch is 40 years from now."

Then I walked out. The "boys" behind the counter did not have any reply.

that sounds like a discussion my friend and his son had around the time of the Beatles Anthology. His son wanted to see Green Day, and he starts going on and on about them. My friend tells his son......do you think they'll have an Anthology in 25 years? 'Nuff said!

I don't even think they'll put out another album in the next 25 year.

Playing Devil's advocate....

The Beatles WERE marketed like a boy band. In fact, they were the prototype for marketing bands like 'N Sync and The Backstreet Boys. The next step in boy band evolution (DEvolution?) after the Beatles was The Monkees.

The Beatles' music speaks for itself and will stand up for years to come. There were even great Monkees records ("Pleasant Valley Sunday" written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin has always been a fave of mine). It's too bad it devolved so far!

A guy I used to play with is being turned into a boy band-like pop star in Sweden. The music isn't terrible but I played with him when he was a struggling, credible singer-songwriter. You can see and hear him here:

At least Sony is paying him well...

Skater boys, geesh. I wonder what they would do with my 1977 "Banana Board". I wish I still had that Nash board. Nasty memories of those days, I think my knees are finally healing from all the crap we use to do.
