Morris County Couple Removes Halloween Hanging


MADISON, N.J. (AP) -- Public uproar that compared an image to a lynching has led a Madison family to remove a hanged dummy from its Halloween display.

Cheryl and David Maines said they fear for their safety.

The couple's 27-year-old son has decorated their home for seven Halloweens. The hanged dummy, which has a black hood, is usually partially hidden.

But police started getting calls on Sunday, one from neighbor Millie Hazlewood and several others saying the display was racist. The state chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People said it was offensive and insensitive.

The Maines replaced their Halloween display Tuesday and erected a sign that read: "Thanks to the assistance of Millie Hazlewood and her friends, Halloween and Christmas decorations will no longer be celebrated here."

They said the display was not meant to be a hate crime.

I think thats insane. It's not racist. Colored folks aren't the only ones who have been hanged. People need to lighten up a little.....

You know, I was right ther on 9/11 but it doesn't mean I immediately said, "Oh! Its killing me! 9/11 all over again" when Cory lidle flew his plane into a building. My immediate impression was, Its them f...king idiots flying low over the harbor. I see it everyday from work office window.

I was over my friends last weekend decorating, We noosed a 4 foot doll in front of his house in a tree with a scream mask on it. But we went one step further. We bound the arms behind its back and the legs together with twist ties. Then stuff a sock in the scream mask mouth.

But it was a white stuffed doll.

Any you whities wanna stop by and file a complaint?

Well said Mark. I have never seen such a sensitive group of people before. It's ridiculous.
