I have it (big surprise) and have listened to both the CD version and the 5.1 DVD audio version.
Realize in advance that his is coming from a HUGE beatles fan. I know every take of every song backwards and forwards (in some cases quite literally). Also note that this is a soundtrack to a show, so in many cases songs segue and change in unusual ways thatonly make sense in this context.
I originally received the 4-song sampler from a friend at a local radio station. That contained the tracks that are likely the biggest standouts in terms of quality and change in the stereo version.
Without going through a track-by-track review as I do not have the time right now and I am sure there are plenty out there...
The stereo version and the 5.1 version are actually quite different, in that different things are brought to the forefront in each. Given that the price difference between the two is only $5 and the added second disc in the special edition DVD audio version contains dolby and dts 5.1 versions that will play in a regular DVD player as well, I have to totally recommend getting the special edition version.
The stereo verison has a few standout songs that any Beatles fan is going to love:
(1) Strawberry Fields Forever - This takes several versions starting with one of John's Santa Isabel demo tapes and moves forward through the Kenwood Demos, through to the EMI sessions and finally to RC5 which was the take that was used for the final release version from exactly 1:00 until the song to the end. The way it is layered in and builds upon itself is just fantastic
(2) Gnik Nus - Sun King backwards. Who knew that this melody would sound just as great backwards?
(3) The true highlight of the whole release: While My Guitar Gently Weeps. This I believe is the only track that has anything brand new on it. Sir George Martin took the demo that was released on Anthology and wrote a beautiful, touching orchestration to supplement it. It literally brought me to tears the first time I heard it.
The 5.1 version adds a whole extra dimension to the release. There are some songs that benefit from the surround treatment more than others. The biggest beneficiaries are the middle years' songs and all of the Harrison tunes.
If you want to fall in love with this 5.1 release, find somewhere where you can listen to it and put on I Am The Walrus. The complexity of the latter section of this piece lends itself to the extra channels like nothing else on the CD.
Another wonderful surround treatment is Something, with the band in front and the strings behind you, it adds depth and clarity to a song so unlike anything else it the Beatles catalog.
The mashups are interesting and in at least one case are of sings that you normally would not think of as complementary, but keeping the idea of this as a soundtrack in mind they do work quite well. Hats off to Sir George and son Giles for a new masterpiece!
Hope you all have a chance to pick this up and enjoy it.

I have been listening to the CD [ really like it ] and didn't realize the DVD was a different version - I thought the 5.1 was the only difference and I don't have a surround sound system yet- thanks for the review RT !!

The 5.1 is the only difference, but it is a major difference. The separation allows you to differentiate between the instruments, singers, effects, etc far more.

I agree with these statements 100%. This CD/DVD is a refreshing take on timeless classics. If you have the means and correct setup, listen to the analog high resolution DVD-Audio version. It is simply astounding!!!!

Yes. Analog. The same as with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVD's, high resolution audio is not yet available through S/PDIF (Optical) or Digital Coax. It can be passed through HDMI if you have the right equipment. This article from Wikipedia can explain it MUCH better than I could ever.....
"In order to play DVD-Audio, a preamplifier or surround controller with six analogue inputs was originally required. Whereas DVD-Video audio formats such as Dolby Digital and DTS can be sent via the player's digital output to a receiver for conversion to analogue form and distribution to speakers, DVD-Audio cannot be delivered via unencrypted digital audio link at sample rates higher than 48 kHz (ie ordinary DVD-Video quality) due to concerns about digital copying.
However encrypted digital formats have now been approved by the DVD Forum, the first of which was Meridian Audio's MHR (Meridian High Resolution). The High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI 1.1) also allows encrypted digital audio to be carried up to DVD-Audio specification (6 × 24-bit/96 kHz channels or 2 × 24-bit/192 kHz channels). The six channels of audio information can thus be sent to the amplifier by several different methods:
1. The 6 audio channels can be decrypted and extracted in the player and sent to the amplifier along 6 standard analogue cables.
2. The 6 audio channels can be decrypted and then re-encrypted into an HDMI or IEEE-1394 (Firewire) signal and sent to the amplifier, which will then decrypt the digital signal and then extract the 6 channels of Audio. HDMI and IEEE-1394 encryption are different from the DVD-A encryption and were designed as a general standard for a high quality digital interface. The amplifier has to be equipped with a valid decryption key or it won't play the disk.
3. The third option is via the S/PDIF (or TOSLINK) digital interface. However, because of concerns over unauthorised copying, DVD-A players are required to handle this digital interface in one of the following ways:
>Turn such an interface off completely. This option is preferred by the music publishers.
>Downconvert the audio to a 2-channel 16 bit/48 kHz PCM signal. The music publishers are not enthusiastic about this because it permits the production of a CD-quality copy, something they still expect to sell, besides DVD-A.
>Downconvert the audio to 2 channels, but keeping the original sample size and bit rate if the producer sets a flag on the DVD-A disc telling the player to do so.
4. A final option is to modify the player, capturing the high resolution digital signals before they are fed to internal D/A converters and convert it to S/PDIF, giving full range digital (but only stereo) sound. There exist already do-it-yourself solutions for some players. "

The connection from the DVD player to the amplifier may be analog, at least in the case where an approved, encrypted digital link is not available, but the music on the DVD is still digital, either PCM 96/24 as in the case of this disc or PCM 48/24 in the case of some DVDAs out there (ie Porcupine Tree).
The disc itself is still a digital medium.

That is what I was trying to get at, but my original message did a poor job of conveying that. I know that all of the media from a DVD/DVD-A,SACD/CD is digital. I was trying to point out the analog connections needed from source to amplification.
