AS THE VAN HALEN WORLD TURNS:
A bunch of little tidbits from the Van Halen family of artists today. First up - a report from today's Boston Globe on the Van Halen 2007 tour:
"Right now Van Halen is contemplating going on tour in 2007.
And in an interesting twist it is neither Sammy Hagar nor David Lee Roth that's got fans buzzing about the potential outing but Eddie Van Halen's 15-year-old son Wolfgang.
It seems that Michael Anthony is out on bass and Wolfgang is in, according to VH's spokesperson. The band is also reportedly passing on Sammy, Dave, and presumably homeboy Gary Cherone, and considering using another family member, a nephew, in the lead vocal spot. (It's unclear if the nephew is drummer Alex Van Halen's son, but if he is, then it would truly be Van Halen, no?)
One way or another the original VH will undoubtedly be back in the news soon when the 2007 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees are announced. The seminal Cali metallers should be shoo-in.
What do I think of this? Baloney really. Sure, something like this might be contemplated, but I can absolutely confirm without any doubt whatsoever that a Van Halen 2007 tour continues to be pitched to promoters and that tour includes frontman David Lee Roth.
The asking price per show is not something that anyone is going to pay if it ain't Roth up front. There are already issues getting around that fact that it is not a true re-union of the original band now that Michael Anthony is confirmed as a non-starter. If EVH wants to do a club tour sometime, then the above idea might fly.
Where are things currently in regards to this 2007 tour with Roth? Still early days...
Something else was sent to me today - posted over at the Roth Army forums. It was a reply from Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame president Terry Stewart in regards to who was under consideration for inclusion in the Van Halen listing, should they receive enough votes from members. It reads: "Sammy [Hagar] is included in the list of band members to be inducted if they are successful in getting enough votes. Gary [Cherone] is not."
Fair or not fair? Tough call that and my guess is that opinions will be divided. But in all seriousness, is the RNR Hall Of Fame at all credible in this day and age? Does anyone still care?
The process of getting listed then inducted is so political and has proven unjust in the past. Kiss still not nominated? The original Santana inducted, except for guitarist Neal Schon? And no sign of Journey while speaking of Neal - after selling 40 million albums for Columbia? That's just a couple of examples that don't make sense.
And lastly - some Sammy Hagar concert news:
From Sammy's redrocker.com website - "Be looking for the latest 5.1 sound mix which is a 2 hour show & 2 hour DVD with a bonus!! Coming in February! It's awesome! It may be the best concert footage I've ever seen. The St. Louis fans were unbelievable!!! Let's talk about seeing Red in the audience! Sammy & the Wabo's Livin It Up St. Louis, featuring special guests, Michael Anthony and the Other Half. (Don't you love the long titles). And if you aren't having any fun yet you certainly will when you see this!! We'll give you more information as we get it...Sammy."
And this from updated TV listings - see it before it arrives on DVD: "Sun, Dec 3 - 9:00 PM ET / 6:00 PM PT Sammy Hagar And The Wabos - Livin' It Up Live! - Premiere
Caught live in St Louis on their sold out 2006 US tour, Sammy And The Wabos bring down the house with songs from their new album, Livin' It Up as well as some of Sammy's famed solo work. Joined on stage for the second half of the show by legendary Van Halen bassist, Michael Anthony, the band rips through some of rock radio's classic tunes. From "I Can't Drive 55" and "Mas Tequila" to "Finish What You Started" and "Right Now", it's one big Cabo party with the "Red Rocker"!"
